St Tudy Allotments

The allotments officially opened on Saturday 18th April 2009 with a get together of allotment holders and guests.  The Allotments were opened by Ellen Hunter our resident Olympic Gold medallist.

There are nineteen allotments in total with room for probably another five or six.  The land belongs to Philip Mutton from Wadebridge who has very kindly rented the land to the Parish Council at a very reasonably rent.  An association has been formed with all the usual rules and regulations.

The Parish Council put up the fence including rabbit wire to keep the pesky beasts away from our veg!  With the help of conservation group Heaven Scent we were able to pick beech saplings from the Pencarrow estate and plant them against the hedge to provide a screen from Oak Park.

So now we are up and running and we have created a magical area.  We have a pheasant nesting in the long grass (July 2009) and you can see and hear plenty of other birds and other wildlife.  Our neighbours are the sheep that munch their way through the adjoining field.  They have recently had a shearing and are looking very smart with their shorn coats!

Personally I am very proud of my allotment.  It may not be enormous but so far this year I have dug potatoes, picked French beans, spinach, lettuce and courgettes.  I have eaten raspberries from my neighbours plot (with her permission!) and received donations of plants and seeds from fellow allotment holders.

I have learnt so much in a very short period of time.  It is amazing what you can learn from other people and your own mistakes.

We are extremely grateful to our resident engineers John and Dave who have constructed a water system using water from the nearby stream.  Without this things would have been very difficult especially when the weather was hot a few weeks ago.

A very big thank you to Brian who has cut and strimmed the grass on a regular basis for us.

On Saturday August 29th we will be having an open day at the allotments.  There will be food and wine, a produce and book stall and a raffle.  If you haven’t been all ready come and have a look and see for yourself what a lovely place our allotments are.
