The competition is sponsored by Calor Gas through its Rural Sponsorship Programme and their representative, Mr Paul Soper, presented a framed certificate to Mrs Maggie Lobb, Vice President of St Tudy Women’s Institute. Mr Henry Strapp, County Chairman of the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) then presented an engraved slate plaque to Mrs Mavis Kingdon, President of the WI.

The event was organised by Mr Courtenay V Smale, Executive
Secretary of CPRE and the ceremonies took place by the pump in the centre of the
village. Also present were Mrs
Annabel Johns, Chairman of Cornwall Federation of Women’s Institutes and Mrs
June Swanson who co-ordinated the
competition, together with the three judges –
Judging had taken place during June and July when the judges had visited seventeen villages independently of each other. All were agreed in their praise for the villagers throughout Cornwall taking such a pride in their environment – and St Tudy emerged a clear winner.

Mr Peter Davies, North Cornwall District Council Planning Chairman, paid tribute to St Tudy for its achievement in winning this competition for the second time in three years, and said that the Council was delighted that the people of St Tudy are so proud of their lovely village. |
After photographs for the Press and family albums alike, everyone adjourned to the Village Hall to enjoy delicious cream teas.
It was a warm and gloriously sunny autumn day and the entire village was looking its best. The chestnut tree, where so many villagers had gathered to watch the ceremony, was beginning to turn its leaves to gold and yellow. Many people had worked very hard to maintain the high standards required to win, and Mr Brian Lamerton, Chairman of the Parish Council, thanked the WI for entering the competition and providing the refreshments.
In winning the award St Tudy is now able to go forward to the Calor Gas/Daily Telegraph Great Britain “Village of the Year” competition to be held in London on December 5th. In 1998 St Tudy won the “Best Community” category in the same competition. Some of the winning prize money was spent on installing a lamp by the entrance to the churchyard steps. Will we be lucky again?
