The Glebe Constitutional

Distance: 1 mile Duration: approx 45 min

The title to this short circular walk was going to be “Buzzard Valley” because it passes through a section where buzzards can often be seen hovering.

However this billing would probably mean you would not see one, in the same way as taking an umbrella ensures it will not rain. Therefore please enjoy the “Glebe Constitutional”, and good luck with the bird watching.

This short circular walk avoids all roads and provides the ideal safe route to take small children and dogs. It passes down to the edge of Wetherham Estate and returns you to your starting point in the playing field.

The playing field is located a short distance from the Victorian school turning right up a small alleyway just off Redvale Road.

On entering the field, if you walk behind the children’s play equipment, you discover a granite stile in the hedge larding into the Glebe Sheltered Housing Complex. Follow the tarmac path towards another hidden opening in the far hedge and keep heading south westerly down this narrow track. This path runs between two gardens with one side constructed from breeze block in part and iron railings further down. Cross over the stile at the end which brings you into Wetherham Lane, a quiet, little used, stony track. Head downhill to the bottom past housing developments and farm buildings until you reach the entrance to Wetherham Lodge.

(If at this point you wanted to explore the Wetherham Estate refer to 'Walk One' in this booklet.)

Turn right up the leafy path and you will find a nearly vertical slate stile in the hedge. Climbing the stile brings you into a wooded copse and gorse section prone to being a little boggy. Head in a north easterly direction along the narrow path through the hazel, oak, ash and beach trees. The path rounds a hillock with a leafy drop to the right and continues in a north easterly direction into the “Buzzard Valley” area, so keep your eyes open. Cross the terraced field following the hedge line ahead until you arrive at a section where several footpaths converge near some farm gates.

To keep this walk short, turn right down the hill heading east to another slippery vertical slate stile and across a stream via a wooden walkway. This brings you into a field used for tobogganing on the rare occasion when it snows. Follow the right-hand hedge eastwards up the hill until you come to the stile in the end of the hedge. As mentioned in walk two, this position provides marvelous views of the valley behind, including Tremeer House. Cross the stile and continue eastwards across the small field, and you are again in sight of the playing field.  The footpath runs down the left hand hedge and then cuts across the fence near the school canteen, the long thin building which looks like a left over set from Prisoner Cell Block H. Should the field be full of bullocks and courage fails you, just dash down to the broken fence opposite!
