St
Tudy Carnival
2001 |
![]() |
The St Tudy Carnival is synonymous with
rain but as the evening of Saturday 14th July drew closer not a black cloud in
the sky! In fact the weather stayed dry all evening an
d
everybody had a fantastic time.
The St Breward Band who led the parade around the village entertained the large crowd. They played beautifully although I did hear a rumour that one member had a close encounter with a rather smelly offering left by Ann Master's horse.
The Launceston Majorettes looked splendid in their navy blue and silver and they looked very serious as they 'majoretted' their way along the roads. The little ones bringing up the rear marched beautifully and the musicians played some very 'twinkly' tunes.

As usually they were a large number of walkers and floats and I am sure the judges had a difficult time choosing winners. Mums, dads, grannies and granddads had put a lot of hard work into the many different costumes and decorated trailers. The visiting fairy queens and kings were splendid in their robes and their thrones were highly ornate and original. As were the St Tudy Queen and attendant, alias Amy and Penny Luck really riding in a boat? The St Tudy Fairy Princess, Bryony Horncey looking very pretty in her white full-length robe and sash.
The quality of the floats was very high. Friends, alias the Lobbs and Roberts looked very realistic and I'm sure the sofa was real and not a garden bench! The Simpson's, alias the Matulewicz's and Kempthornes were a formidable sight. How did Patsy and Debbie manage to stay hidden all night? I'm sure they went to bed in their masks!

The Treliske Line Dancers were a hoot; Andrew Pearce and friends performed their line dancing impeccably without a single mistake!

Noah's Ark by the St Tudy Playgroup showed the hard work and dedication of the group and the support they receive. Rosemary Simmons kept perfect control on her animals but just how many packets of biscuits did she go through!

As always the St Tudy WI came up with a very good idea. The Can't Can't Girls were a scream and I saw Tresa Kempthorne in a very different light. I wonder does she always go around showing her frilly knickers. The ladies are to be congratulated on winning their class.
The St Mabyn Young Farmers Survivor float was one to avoid unless you wanted to get a real soaking. I'm sure they enter just to spray everybody with water. Staying with the farming theme the Penhale Farm Kids Stunt Team was a real masterpiece. Just how did they get those quad bikes on the trailer and more to the point how did they stay there?

Ann Masters led the procession around the village on her horse looking very smart. Included in the procession were the vintage and classic cars. You know you are getting old one you see a classic car and realize it was your first car!
The
winners of each class were presented this year with new trophies sponsored by
local businesses. There was the usual barbecue manned by a team of dedicated
cooks and I'm told they sold every last sausage and burger. Behind the scenes
were Caroline Pearce and her band of hardworking helpers. Special mention goes
to Jack Cleave who at 70 something has decided this will be his last carnival
collecting money. This was his best carnival ever collecting just over £180, an
all time record for him. Happy retirement Jack!
The evening finished with a disco in the marquee before many tired children (and mums and dads) were carried home to bed looking forward to another Carnival night in St Tudy.
