St Tudy Carnival

Saturday 13th July 2002

They say the sun shines on the righteous so we must all be very good in St Tudy because the sun shone all day! People gathered early as the floats and fancy dress walkers arrived on the playing fields to gather for the judging and procession. St Tudy Carnival Princess, Emma aged 8, arrived with her attendant Jessica aged 6 in an open top Volvo driven by Ken Metcalf accompanied by his wife Val. There were several visiting queens in various trailers and cars all splendidly decorated and looking very attractive.

The St Breward Silver Band entertained the crowds and the Launceston majorettes looked very smart in their navy uniforms. There were various stalls where people could part with their money and the food from the barbecue was eagerly bought and devoured by hungry children and adults. The ice cream seller did a roaring trade as people sweltered in the evening heat and ate ice cream to cool themselves down.

After the judging was completed the procession, led by Mrs Julie Harper riding Ann Masters horse Hector, began. A slightly different route was taken this year to allow the larger tractors to turn in a field rather than have to take a route out of the village. People waved and cheered and gave generously to the bucket shakers as they went round. The carnival continued well into the evening with a disco and bar in the marquee.
