On a cold and frosty March evening members of St
Mabyn Garden Club were entertained with a talk and slides of old
Wadebridge by Margaret Thompson. Margaret is well known in the area for
her knowledge of the history of Wadebridge and its previous inhabitants.
It was fascinating to see to see the horse drawn vehicles and amazing
that the passengers did not topple off when perched precariously on top
with the luggage. Hats were definitely the must to wear in the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We were travellers in time
without having to move from our seats. Many thanks were given to
Margaret by our

ST MABYN PRE SCHOOL NEEDS YOU!!!
We are looking for members of the community to join our committee, and help run our marvellous local pre school. Whether you could assist with fund raising, marketing or general management tasks, all would be welcome. Recent events involving the future of St Mabyn, St Tudy and St Kew have now been resolved, with the Local Authority now understanding that each village wishes to maintain its own pre school setting. This is great news for us and we are working with St Mabyn Primary School to forge better links between pre and primary education.
Come on Dads, we really need your help as well!! If you can spare a few hours a month, please give us a call and see how you can help. Being a trustee means you have a vote in the future of the pre school and can really make a difference to the Early Years children in our care. We are looking for people from all parts of our community, so please don’t feel you can’t help out if you don’t have children in our care. Please call Matthew on 01208 841 146 or email matthew@matthewslater.com for more details. MATTHEW SLATER, TREASURER for ST MABYN PRE SCHOOL

ST MABYN VILLAGE HALL
The AGM will be on 13th April. We are looking for more committee members to assist with the management of the Hall. We need you to come along and join us. Fresh ideas are sought to help raise crucial funds for the Hall. We meet four times a year. Our request goes out to all residents while at the same time assuring you, that whatever time you have to give as a Committee Member, will be appreciated. THANKS
St Tudy has given us so much ever since we came to live here. Now we are overwhelmed by all the cards and messages we have received, as we must leave this lovely village, which, in our hearts, will always remain our home. Thank you, for everything. PAM AND LOUIS * * * * * * * * *
WE ARE GRATEFUL TO ALL IN THE VILLAGE!!
St Tudy Parish Church has just received from the Bishop of Truro a Certificate of Achievement on paying in full the Common Fund amount of £11,879 assessed on St Tudy Parish Church for the year 2009. The Parochial Church Council is well aware that this success was due not only to the regular members of the Parish Church congregation but also to others in the village who have supported social and musical events through the year and made it possible for the financial obligation to the Diocese to be met. The Common Fund increases to £12375 in 2010: so the work continues as must the efforts to achieve in 2010 the success of 2009.

* * * * * * * *News fROm the two schoolsWe seem to have had a very busy start to the second half of the term here at both St. Tudy and St Mabyn Schools. At St Tudy the children have continued all their sporting activities – football and netball tournaments as well as attending a Streetcheer festival at Bodmin College. Streetcheer is a cross between street dancing and cheerleading and the children learnt some great moves! Class One’s topic this half term is superheroes. They are designing and making superhero capes, writing superhero adventures and considering their superhero Mums! On World Book Day we saw some fantastic outfits as the children (and staff!) dressed up as superheroes or other characters from books. Food features strongly this half term. St. Piran’s day saw the children enjoying pasties for lunch. We have also had a very enjoyable lunch –with Mums, to celebrate Mothering Sunday. ‘The best apple pie ever’ was the comment from one Mum.
Classes Two and Three have been studying the Romans. This resulted in a ‘Roman Day’. The children designed and made outfits at home and there were some amazing results. We went to the village hall where the children had to question Roman characters to find out about their lives. We were then treated to some Roman entertainment – fights with lions and other adversaries, with Caesar deciding if soldiers should live or die! Best of all was the food! Stuffed dormice, flamingo meat, fruit cups and some suspiciously flat honey cake. (Did Class One forget the self raising flour?) We hope the parents enjoyed the food as much as we did! Thank you to Victor Mann who made such a great Caesar. The Year 5 and 6s from both schools are looking forward to their art residential at the Roseland Outdoor Education Centre and have met up to get to know one another a bit better prior to the trip. Thank you to whoever mended the barrier at the entrance to the playground – we do appreciate it.
At St Mabyn it is full steam ahead with our ‘Cascade’ production, which is now gathering momentum. The theme is ‘St Mabyn in the past and ‘The Spirit of the Carnival of St Mabyn’, taking centre stage with Class 3 at the helm. Please remember to put the evening of the 29th and both the afternoon and evening of 30th March in your diaries for the Cascade productions. Meanwhile to compliment our love of everything in the past, Class 2 have been on a visit to Flambards to visit the Victorian Village and Britain in the War exhibitions. They have an air raid shelter in the corner of the classroom and are learning all about children’s lives during the war. Mrs Trethewey came in to talk about her experiences when she was small and living in London. Class 1 have been learning about places around the world, in particular Egypt and France. The children even have an Egyptian and French kitchen in their role play areas! They are looking forward to their trip to the Eden project where they will be imagining that they are seasoned travellers and will travel through the rainforests and deserts taking photographs and snapshots along the way. Well done to all the St Mabyn children who took part in the Wadebridge Music festival. All received certificates, all with lovely comments about their musical or spoken entries. Thanks must also go to Jenny Trethewey for her hard work supporting the verse speakers.
Children from both schools participated in a cross country run at Wadebridge School, some of whom will now go on to the area finals at Newquay. Well done especially to Olivia from St Mabyn who was the first girl to finish overall. Well done everyone!
St Mabyn (and Helland) Conservatives
The St Mabyn and Helland Branch was awarded the Phoenix Cup, for the most revitalised branch at the recent AGM of the North Cornwall Conservatives Association. Warmest congratulations to all who worked so hard for this. Members’ activities will now be concentrating on the run up to the General Election and anyone interested in helping or becoming involved is invited to contact John on 01208 841831. Dear Friends
My first recollection of an Easter egg is one made by my cousin Winifred the daughter of my Auntie and Uncle, Bakers and Confectioners, who lived across the road from us in Kettering, Northants. I was at Junior school just yards from where I lived with my Mum, in 1943. Despite the restrictions and shortages on anything other than basic foodstuffs Winifred could always pull off a surprise or two. This particular Easter after Church on Sunday morning I went hurriedly and excitedly with her to a friend she had near the Church. There on the front room table was a box with my name on it!
What a thrill it was to uncover a marzipan (or was it almond paste) Easter egg decorated with my name in white icing. Naturally I was thrilled and rushed home across the park to show my Mum and eagerly await teatime when I could sample it. It seemed like the longest afternoon of my short life until Mum finally cut me a slice of this unexpected gem of an Easter egg. Winifred’s instructions were quite clear ‘just one slice a day Raymond!’ until it had all gone. I think the joy or impatience of the daily wait lasted about two weeks!
Of course we all know that Easter eggs now, in their multitude of variations, still have a Spring-time and new life significance. Looking back my 1943 egg had other connotations that still remain with me even now, perhaps with you too? The deeper concept of the unique nature of Easter also needs to be taken a bit at a time but if we do that there is a lasting and personal message therein. A message I have found vital to my life and lifestyle.
The kindness of my cousin and the joy she brought to me is still important but it pales into insignificance when I think of the cost of that first Easter, a price paid in full so that you or I, if we wish, can be rescued and set on a road that leads to life in all its fullness. I still love marzipan! May I wish you and yours here and elsewhere a time of rich blessings this Easter. Rev. Ray Avent Minister of St Tudy Methodist Church (01208) 816821 or aventray@hotmail.com
TREMEER OPEN DAY AND CHURCH FETE: 15 MAY
Following the successful and very happy event at Lamellan two years ago, Lady Vanessa George has offered to open the Tremeer Gardens on Saturday 15th May from 12.30pm to 4.30pm. Admission will be £3 for adults (children under 16 free). Refreshments will be available. Because of the logistical problems of organising two large events during May, it has been decided to amalgamate the annual Church fete with the Open Day, and the stalls that normally feature at the Fete will be at Tremeer Gardens where there should still be a good display of Rhododendrons and Camellias. There will be car parking preferably for visitors for distant parts. The event will be widely advertised and it is hoped that it will raise a substantial sum to assist the Parish Church with its ever-increasing running costs. There will be a meeting for those who normally organise stalls at the Church Fete on 13th April at 2pm at Tremeer. There has been many offers of help and we hope that no one will feel left out, so if you would like to assist in any way, please contact Vanessa George at 851729 or Geoffrey Gibbons at 851267.

CAN YOU HELP US?
As you will be aware from other articles in this Magazine, the Open Day at Tremeer on 15th May will also incorporate the Annual Church Fete, the principal fundraising event of the year. Can you help us by offering prizes for the Raffle and Tombola, items for the Bric-a-Brac, Household and Bottle stalls, and any items that may attract the many visitors we hope will come and enjoy a day in Tremeer Gardens. Any suitable items can be delivered to Geoffrey or Hazel Gibbons at 4, Chestnut Close (851267) or will be collected by arrangement. Also good books and toys, mystery parcels and anything saleable.

With the Parish Fete being held earlier this year on Saturday 15th May, may we once again call for your kind donations of tins for the Tin Mine. Anything in a tin will be gratefully received: tonic water, baked beans, boot polish, cat food, Brasso, peas and carrots, cocktail sausages, chopped tomatoes, golden syrup, Marmite – you name it – we’ll be happy to receive it! There will be a box in our porch at Appletreewick, Wadebridge Road to put them in. Many thanks in advance. STEPHEN AND DIANA RICHARDS
