ST MABYN GARDEN CLUB

Mr Tom Ellis from Ellis Gardens, Polyphant Nurseries entertained our members at our October meeting with a talk and slides on the History of Gardening.  It was very interesting to see the evolution of the modern garden.  Even in Ancient Egypt formal gardens were laid out for relaxation and enjoyment.  Watering must have been a problem! Though, we do know that the sands of the desert have been encroaching at a constant rate on what is green land.  We were shown how gardens
changed through the centuries. The beautiful gardens of the Italian noblemen from the 17th and 18th centuries influenced the gardens of the stately homes of England. Many of these gardens were demolished when Capability Brown came on the scene and landscaping to open park views became the latest vogue. Tom Ellis finished up with our modern garden (varied in so many ways!).

For our November meeting we turned to herbs.  Herbs are sometimes looked upon as a poor relation in comparison with other plants in our gardens. Thank goodness this attitude is changing and our speaker Sue Goodswen certainly explained why.  With the aid of many colourful slides, members were informed how herbs have been used for medicinal, cosmetic and culinary purposes throughout the centuries.  We only have to think of Brother Cadfael the medieval monk in the popular
television series.  Various types of herbs can be found in fields, hedgerows and grass verges. Sue also stressed that many can be highly toxic such as bella donna and digitalis (foxglove). So before you go searching for wild herbs to use as a culinary or medicinal delight do take your little herb book with you!  In all it was a very interesting and informative talk and members felt they had certainly learnt much about herbs and their uses.

Our next meeting on 9th December is the Christmas Party at St Mabyn Village Hall at 7.15pm.  There will be musical entertainment and a quiz.  Members bring a plate of refreshments so you can guarantee on a good supper!  We start the New Year with Mr Peter Davies who is renowned for his interesting talks.  On Wednesday 13 January 2010 at 7.30pm in St Mabyn Village Hall he will be giving a presentation about Bodmin Moor.  For details and more information contact Angela Bunney (Secretary) on 01208 841511.

“Hands off our Schools” Coffee Morning                             8

A huge thank you to all those who supported our coffee morning on the 14th November.
A magnificent £326.35 was raised.  Thank you to Jo, Petra, Jane & Julie who baked, manned the
Bring & Buy, served teas, washed up etc. Congratulations to Angela Hocking who won the limited
edition picture kindly donated by Jane King. The weather could have been kinder to us, but despite
this we had a pretty good turnout.  Thanks again everyone.     Sue & John Dibble

ST TUDY PARISH COUNCIL

The full Parish Council met on Wednesday 28th October. Cornwall
Councillor Cllr Jeremy Rowe and Ms Sara Simms, Cornwall Council local
network manager, also attended. Ms Simms gave a short report on the network
and its functions. There was discussion on the St Tudy/ St Mabyn schools situation. It was unlikely
that there would be a new school at Longstone because of Highways objections. Cllr Rowe stated
that where a village loses its school, the
village shop and pub are adversely affected. A study on a new school was being made, to be sited
in St Mabyn, not at St Tudy. After Cllr Rowe left, discussion on the school continued. On the
instructions given at the previous Council Meeting, the Parish Clerk had written to the St Tudy
Head Teacher with copies to MP Dan Rogerson, Cllr Rowe, the Diocesan Board of Schools and
Cornwall Council expressing St Tudy Council views. Another letter had been drafted addressed to
the Diocesan Director of Education agreeing that here had been much misinformation talked about
in the village and some cases of intimidation and aggression directed towards members of the
school governing body. Our Council wants a school in the heart of St Tudy.

Copies of relevant correspondence to date in this matter may be seen on the St Tudy website ww.sttudy.org.uk/School/StT&StM.htm . There were no planning applications outstanding at the date of the meeting.

St Tudy Parish Council meetings are held in the Village Hall at 7pm on the last Wednesday of each month except in the months of August and December. Members of the public are always welcome to attend, to raise matters of concern at the beginning of the meeting or to stay for interest's sake. The Chairman and members of the Parish Council take this opportunity to wish all villagers a Happy Christmas and hope for a peaceful and prosperous New Year.     MEv Shelley

RETIREMENT PARTY

PUPILS, parents and other well-wishers, who have known a popular local headteacher are invited to a retirement party celebrating her 13 years of service. Mrs Daphne Puttock has led St Mabyn Church of England Primary School for more than a decade; last December she gave the year’s notice required of head teachers. Parents, staff and governors of St Mabyn School are organising a leaving party to be held at Lanarth Hotel at St Kew Highway on Thursday, 17th December at 7.30pm.

“Mrs Puttock asked us not to do anything formal,” said Anne-Marie Irons, a parent, who has headed up the school’s Home School Association (HSA) for several years. “It’s going to be an informal buffet party with a festive holiday theme. I know that Mrs Puttock would be happy to see some of her previous students and their families, so we’d like to encourage them all please to come.”

Guests are requested to bring some party food to contribute to the buffet: pasties, dips, mince pies, cheese and grapes, or anything tasty and seasonal. Jane McDonald, present chair of the HSA, said: “We hope that even if people can’t come, that they will spread the word among past parents and students. This event is completely separate from the events surrounding the federation of St Mabyn and St Tudy schools; it’s a straightforward retirement party to mark the years that Mrs Puttock has spent as our headteacher.”

If you have any questions, contact HSA secretary Gillian Molesworth on 01208 841453; people are welcome just to show up on the night. Lanarth Hotel and Caravan Park PL30 3EE is off the A39 between the St Mabyn turning and St Kew Highway. Their number is 01208 841 215.

Nancy Arthorpe de Lacy Williams

Nancy died very peacefully at Windmill Court Nursing Home on Saturday 10th October aged 95.  She loved living in Glebe Parc and had made so many friends in Cornwall since moving here from Lincolnshire in 1996.  She often said it was the best thing she’d ever done.  We are very grateful to Pastor Brian Parkman for his care, to Ivy for playing the organ at her “celebration” at the Chapel and to Rev Ray Avent for his kind words about “A Windmill Girl in her 90’s!”  Nancy would have loved it – and her “party” afterwards. Thank you, everyone, especially her friends at St Tudy Methodist Church, for your kindness and thoughtfulness to her and to us.  We know what a special little lady she was but we have been quite overwhelmed by all your messages, cards, flowers and love.  This truly is a remarkable village.                                                                                               Jane and Bob

ST TUDY VILLAGE HALL

The Hall Management Committee wish to thank all of those of you who worked to make the Bonfire
Night Celebrations such a success. The Hall made a total profit of £564 after all the fireworks and other
expenses were paid.

Special mention must be made of the hard working bonfire fuel gatherers who collected £512, of the vendors of the hot soup and the pasties, of the fireworks team, of the first aiders and of the collectors of the gate money. The School and Pre-school kindly organized the prizes and the Guy Fawkes of which there were eight assorted entrants. It was difficult to judge but a lady guy won the competition. Well done, all of you.                   Margaret Shelley

HELP FOR HEROES

The talk given on 9th November by Major General PG Williams CMG OBE was a great success. An audience of well over 70 enjoyed a fascinating glimpse of life in East Germany seen through the eyes of one who spent many years there before the fall of the Berlin Wall twenty years ago.

Peter William’s commentary on the events as he experienced them will live long in the memory and be a reminder, if one is needed, that we have yet to arrive at a time where real security is more than an aspiration. The charity, Help for Heroes, will have benefited from this talk to the sum of £570, a clear reflection of the concern felt for those in the armed forces who have suffered and will yet suffer from their service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thank you

David, Jane, Mary & Nina would like to thank everyone for all the many cards, letters, flowers and condolences we have received on the tragic death of our son Keith. These are a great comfort to us and will sustain us in the months to come. We are indeed privileged to live in this lovely village.

SERVICE OF NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS

On Sunday 27th December at 10am in St Tudy Church, an augmented choir will sing the traditional service in which there will be carols both for choir and congregation.

As you will note from other items in this Magazine, this will be the only service in the Benefice on that date and it is hoped that it will attract a substantial number who will wish to take part in this celebration of the reality, rather than the glossy, TV, and supermarket version of Christmas.

The day is more appropriate than some; in past years it was more usual to sing carols only on Christmas Day and during the twelve days thereafter until Epiphany on 6th January. As this note is being written we can already hear on radio and TC the Herald Angels at work six weeks early!!

EXTRACTS FROM (OTHER) CHURCH MAGAZINES

·         Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7pm. Please use the back door.

·         The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

·         Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.

·         Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.

Allen Valley Singers

Suddenly the school half term was over plus Halloween and Bonfire Night. I wonder if Guido Fawkes, mercenary as he was, thought that we would still be remembered for a failed attempt at blowing up the Houses of Parliament, some 500 years later.) More pertinent to the choir, we are on the run towards Christmas and all the intervening concerts. Old favourites and new songs are being practised and programmes devised for the variety of concerts and venues.

Our next performances were scheduled for Marshgate W.I., on the 12th November and at Wyndhurst Orchard, Association, Wadebridge on 17th November. We look forward to our performances at Tintagel, in concert with the Orpheus Male Voice Choir on Sunday 8th December and to singing at St. Tudy Methodist Church on Thursday 17th December. We have also been invited to sing at Eden but at the time of writing, the date is still to be arranged.  All of these concerts will be reported in the January publications.

Current details about these concerts can be obtained from our Chairman and Musical Director. We look forward to 2010 and another year of good music, fulfilling singing and friendship. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and all best wishes for a happy and peaceful New Year.

If you would like to join us, you are always welcome to contact our Musical Director, Janette Man. Telephone 01208 841784. Other queries to our Chairman Kym Hall. Telephone 01208 851723. Publicity Officer, Joyce Hargrave-Wright (Dr.) Telephone 01208 264004

St Tudy Garden Produce Association

It was a great shame that there was a clash of events on Monday 9th November when Mr Mike Rowe came to tell us about beekeeping: several members wanted to go to both talks, which were equally informative. Hopefully with the village calendar of events now up and running on the village web site this sort of conflict will not occur in future – if people bother to check first!

Anyway, a good number of members did choose bees and were rewarded with an entertaining evening learning about these amazing creatures as well as being able to purchase jars of Mr Rowe’s own local honey.  There may well be a few more hives being set up around the area in the next few months, as people were very interested in keeping bees themselves.

Our next meeting is on Monday 14th December in the Village Hall, which will commence with Christmas refreshments prior to the usual “brief” AGM – Brian Lamerton always tries to limit this to as short a time as possible!  Then we shall have a quiz set by Sue Dibble, followed by hot mince pies etc.  Subs will be due that night, but don’t let that put you off what is always a good do!  See you there by 7.30.                   Jane King

FROM REVEREND MARGARET

Advent Sunday is the day when the Christian year begins. It is a sombre season when the colour of purple is used. It is a time to look back at the previous year, reflecting on its happenings and a time to look forward in hope and trust.

It has not been a particularly good year for some people and quite a few in our communities will be spending their first Christmas without their loved ones. Please remember them in your prayers.

Advent is of course a time of waiting and of preparation for the new birth at Christmas. It often gets lost in the run up to Christmas. One way of keeping it is to spend 5 minutes extra each day in prayer.

I have listed most of the Christmas services but I am sure lots more events will be happening so please look at the posters around the villages.

Please encourage the children to come to the Christmas services and on Christmas morning to bring a gift from Santa to show everyone.

There will be a Christmas Tree Festival on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th December in St Tudy Church. This will be a joint occasion with  St Tudy School and the church. Please feel free to bring a decorated tree. Offers of refreshments and volunteers to act as stewards in the church will be greatly received. For further info contact Jo at the school.

31st December will be a bittersweet day this year as it is the day on which Mrs Daphne Puttock retires as Headteacher from St Mabyn School. Her vibrance, dynamism, enthusiasm and her wonderful teaching will be greatly missed. St Mabyn School has always been a very welcoming place thanks to Daphne and her staff and I know that she will be greatly missed on a personal level. We wish her every blessing in her retirement and say “thank you” to her. We are very fortunate in the fact that Mrs Karen Holmes, Headteacher at St Tudy will become Executive Head of the two schools of St Tudy and St Mabyn as they “federate” on 1st January. We wish Karen the very best of luck.

Please let me know of anyone who would like communion at home at Christmas.

May the joy of the Christ Child and the true spirit of Christmas be in all your hearts. Alan joins me in wishing you all a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year                                                                                                      REV MARGARET

Christmas can be an active time for many!

It is my joy and pleasure to wish you, your family and friends a time of sharing and blessing this Christmas. We need to remember also what a time of real excitement this can be for the younger members of our community. I well remember a time of exceptional excitement just a few years ago when I was overseas just after Christmas, co-ordinating some Christian support work for children, young people and families. I was asked to speak at a Baptist Church in the suburbs of Bucharest, Romania. Included in the programme was the issue of shoeboxes sent by people like yourself from England. The Church was packed, a couple of hundred children were there, the sense of expectation was electric!! I gave my children’s address with help of my travelling friend 'bluebag' after which trollies were wheeled in piled high with shoeboxes. From where I was sitting I could see the expressions on each child's face as they came forward and received their box. As soon as the word was given they funnelled out of the Church and raced to their homes to open their very own Christmas gift from England.
The coming of Jesus to Bethlehem all those years ago still has a world span of individual excitement. I am still reeling from the fact, after my own 72 Christmasses, that He came to Bethlehem with me in mind; it remains an amazing thing but true!

If your Christmas is less full and joyful than some in the past have been, through separation from loved ones, for whatever reason, remember the shoebox of His love for you is not empty yet by any means. Unpack more of it as the 12 days of this Christmas unroll. Every blessing,                          Rev Ray.

We are replacing The Clink Christmas lights and adding to the lights on The Forge this year at a cost of £700.  We are very fortunate that Mark Orchard of Cedar Croft Nurseries has kindly offered to provide our village Christmas Tree once again this year, so our grateful thanks to him.  Our thanks also go to David and Karen of Kernow Metal for their very kind donation towards the Christmas funds.

Another date for your diary is Christmas Eve, when we will be serving mulled wine and mince pies in The Clink from 6.00pm.  A warm welcome to everyone to come and join us, we are also looking forward to a visit from Santa then as well!

THANKS

I would like to thank all those in St Mabyn who sponsored me for the Fleet Bike Ride (Front Line Emergency Equipment Trust) in September. I managed to raise the grand sum of £508.10.          Trixie Rasmussen

ST MABYN MISTLETOE FAIR

St Mabyn’s fourth Mistletoe Fair will take place on Saturday 5th December in St Mabyn Village Hall between 12noon and 4pm.   The event will be opened by Tony Dickinson, our very own Village Crier.

Apart from mistletoe and holly there will be books, crafts, hampers, a children’s workshop and bran tub, games, prizes, cards, jewellery, tombola, food, preserves, cakes, plants etc. as well as a raffle with some super prizes. We hope you will stop for a while and enjoy some refreshments and a chat as we intend this to be very much a social occasion.

The Organisers have been working hard to ensure that this year’s Mistletoe Fair will be special, so do come along and join the fun.  What’s more entrance is FREE - the proceeds are for Village Hall Funds.

THE FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH

The ‘Friends’ are pleased to announce that Venning Davey of St Mabyn has agreed to join the committee.  He will be a great asset to the team and will undoubtedly make a very significant contribution.

Lady Mary Holborrow will speak on the History of the Lord Lieutenancy at our 22nd January Meal with Wine in St Mabyn Village Hall – further details in the January edition of The Magazine.

Looking ahead to our 5th March Meal and Talk, Giles Clotworthy of the National Trust will be the speaker – details later.

For those who have not yet attended one of our Meals, why not give it a try.  We offer a free glass of wine with a delicious main course (vegetarian option) followed by dessert offering a massive variety, plus tea and coffee.  The meal is always followed by a very interesting talk by a local speaker.

The end of a year is always a good time to thank everyone who has contributed in any way toward the continued success of the ‘Friends.’  Not only have Members been most supportive, but also we are extremely grateful for everyone who has contributed to the Friends’ success by attending their various functions.   Our Meals with Wine followed by a talk in St Mabyn Village Hall are highly popular, and our first venture into Wine and Wisdom most certainly exceeded our expectations.  Sadly, the weather took its toll once again and, for the third consecutive year, Jazz on the Green had to take place in the church. Whilst the church has proved to be a wonderful venue for musical events, many people will recall that our first successful Jazz on the Green in 2006 took place on a warm and perfect sunny evening outdoors.

Original ideas for lucrative fundraising can be quite a challenge and the Committee is always pleased to hear from anyone who can make ‘suitable’ suggestions.  However, it is doubtful whether Reverend Margaret would react with much enthusiasm were she asked to emulate the actions of an east end of London vicar who, along with her churchwardens, did a sponsored all night camp on the church roof! It has also been suggested that sponsored abseiling from a church tower is a good way to raise cash.  However, St Mabyn church roof is very precious and, although the tower is high and mighty, it is definitely not up to the rigours of wannabe Spider men (or women). Pity really as the elf ‘n’ safety jobsworths would have a field day! The ‘Friends’ wish everyone a very happy and peaceful Christmas.                                                                                              AUDREY COOKE
