Dear Friends

As I sit down to share these few thoughts with you all for February, it is snowing outside and the lunchtime news sounds very foreboding in terms of weather!! We all know that, generally speaking, as a nation we do not respond too brilliantly to spells of fog, ice, snow etc. Travel soon becomes hazardous and to stay put is often much more sensible overall. However, I feel sure like me our sense of gratitude goes out to all those who work away at times like this to meet our varying needs.

Yet, it is gratifying to know also that seemingly in no time at all the whole sense of re-creation in nature will become evident again. Bulbs pushing through, shrubs even trees beginning to show signs of life and hopefully temperatures rising then we wear fewer layers of clothing when walking down our street or road.

My hope is that together as a community of people in St. Tudy and district in 2010 there will be an ongoing sense of re-creation in and around us and our lifestyles. In my Chambers dictionary under re-creation is says ‘ to create again - especially in the mind’. I firmly believe that each year brings with it the distinct possibility for everyone to allow a sense of re-creation to go on in and around themselves and their loved ones. Do let me know if I can be of any help to you or your family.

Rev. Ray Avent  [01208] 816821 or  ‘aventray@hotmail.com’

New Year – New start

And what a start to the year it was! My first few days as Headteacher of both St Mabyn and St Tudy Primary Schools were spent closing both of them due to the weather! I spent many hours glued to the phone speaking to every member of staff – sometimes two or three times during the day for updates about both villages. I now know all members of staff quite well through our conversations, and in some cases, have spoken to most of their family! Not necessarily the best way to begin the year – all our plans for the first few weeks turned upside down, but now thank goodness, getting back to normal.

From the start of January I have become the Headteacher of both village schools, working in both schools every day. At St Tudy I will no longer have responsibility for a class and will spend my time mainly in the office. I will still lead assemblies and all other parts of school life – just not teaching on a day to day basis. At St Mabyn I am splitting my time between the main school office and my own little office upstairs where I am familiarising myself with the workings of the school. I am also leading assemblies here and getting to know the children.

I have now met many parents and friends of St Mabyn School, who I thank for their welcome to both the school and the community. At St Mabyn School we welcome Mrs Alison McDonald as Head of Teaching and Learning, teaching in Class 2, and Mrs Kate Lang as school secretary.

Both schools will be working together through the year. Some things will be for the staff of both schools: sharing their ideas for planning together, organising trips together and visiting the other school sometimes to teach. Some things will be for the children to be together: the younger children meeting together for forest school sessions or to use the outside space at St Mabyn; older children sharing school trips and camps and also sports days. Some things will be based around our resources, sharing ICT software, books and artefacts. All, we hope will lead to a greater sense of community between the two schools as well as still retaining each school’s own identity.

We hope that by having a joint governing body for the two schools, this will lead to a greater collaboration between not just the two schools, but both communities. We are all looking forward to a positive future for all our children.                                                                                              Karen Holmes

FROM REVEREND MARGARET

January 2010 has been a very difficult and sad month. The weather has been atrocious with snow and freezing conditions and St Tudy has been particularly saddened by the deaths of Charles Ward and Caroline Pearce.

Charles will always be remembered as a cricket fanatic and a gentleman and Caroline will always be remembered for her kindness and goodness, her willingness to help anyone and her smile.

Please remember their loved ones in your prayers and may Charles and Caroline rest in peace.

17th February marks the beginning of Lent. I have not organised anything as yet so if you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

At the moment, there seems to be a lot of poorly people in the Benefice. Please let me know of any who need a visit and remember them in your prayers. Every blessing.

We would like to thank everyone who helped and supported our coffee morning in December towards the cost of the Christmas lights on The Forge and The Clink.  We hope you agree that the new lights looked great.  Thank you to Phil Tizzard for kindly making the new decorations and to Sue Dibble for the lovely presents.

We raised a magnificent £212.57 on the morning including donations in the collecting tin at the Post Office.

Thank you to Ian and Zoe, and Brian as our Santa, for all their efforts on Christmas Eve at The Clink, it was a lovely evening enjoyed by all.

Allen Valley Singers

The choir had an excellent run-up to Christmas. We sang in concert with the Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir, at the Methodist Church in Tintagel on Sunday 6th December.  Our last concert before Christmas took place at St. Tudy Methodist Chapel.  We sang two sets, the first from our regular repertoire, which included, ‘Wayfaring Stranger’, arranged by Steve Tyrrell and the second from our Christmas range, including, ‘Genny’s Carol,’ (Glory in the Highest). Steve Tyrrell played two solos that delighted us all and Zoe Ray sang two beautiful carols. Richard Man, who admitted to being our Musical director’s husband, read a splendid poem and then he and Jan performed a very funny duologue (‘With Bells On’, from ‘A Wayne in a Manger’, by Gervaise Phinn). We are now preparing for another good year of singing, including new music, to add to our extensive repertoire. If you would like to join us, you are always welcome to contact our Musical Director, Janette Man. Telephone 01208 841784. Other queries to our Chairman, Kym Hall. Telephone 01208 851723. Publicity Officer. Joyce Hargrave-Wright (Dr.) Telephone 01208 264004.

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A PRIEST

Exactly 9 years ago this week, I visited St Tudy, St Mabyn and Michaelstow to look quietly at the churches, and the Rectory with the view of applying for the post of non-stipendary priest (House for duty). It was obviously a very big decision to make as it meant selling our lovely home in Scunthorpe, giving up our friends and Alan seeking early retirement. All this is now history as I was offered the job of Priest in Charge (House for Duty). I was to be paid a stipend of £100 per annum (it is taxed!) and I would work 3 days each week and Sundays. This of course, has proved impossible, as there are times when I do not get a day off for several weeks. I can of course only blame myself for this situation, but if I am needed I try to be available. During last week due to the dreadful weather, we have been marooned in the Rectory and I have spent some of this time thinking about what I do as a priest. I am of course responsible for organising and leading the Sunday and weekday services. I have to use the services that are legal according to Canon Law. These are mainly Common Worship and the Book of Common Prayer. I am aware that some people do not like Common Worship and others do not like Common Prayer but throughout the Benefice, I try to give the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the services they like the best.

Because each church has at least one service every Sunday, I cannot be in St Mabyn and Michaelstow at the same time, so I am grateful to Peter Coster and John Brendon Cook for sharing with me the leading of the worship. I am also grateful that the Bodmin team have helped me out for many months on the third Sunday at Michaelstow. This means that I have to spend a lot of time on the telephone trying to get help with services, a situation that was particularly hard when I had to have time off after surgery last year. Obviously linked with the service preparation is the writing of sermons. These usually take up Saturday mornings, so I do not always make the coffee mornings. The telephone plays an important part in my ministry, as it is my first aid in contacting people in all sorts of situations. On a busy day, I can average making and receiving between 20 and 30 calls.

Because we have 3 churches in the Benefice we also have 3 PCCs which meet quarterly plus a quarterly Benefice meeting. Throughout the year, there are 3 fetes, 3 Harvest Festivals, 3 patronals, 3 lots of Christmas services etc. There are also different organisations, which use the churches for their special times and of course various musical events go on, which I feel I must attend. I am a school governor at both schools. This can be very demanding and as with much of what I do, the confidentiality is vital. I visit both schools nearly every week to take assembly. This is a very important part of my job as the church is seen to be active in the lives of the children.

The “Occasional Offices” are another important aspect of my work. These are baptisms, weddings and funerals. Sadly however, I have had a great number of

funerals since I arrived. It is very important that I spend quality time with those seeking baptism and marriage and the bereaved. I do try to be available as much as I can. When the telephone rings, particularly in the early morning you never know what will be facing you. It might be a simple query that can be dealt with or something very important such as a funeral. Often I receive calls from people seeking information about their ancestors. This can involve searching in the parish registers. I have copies of the St Tudy entries of Births, Marriages and Deaths from the last 1500s in my study.

The ordinary parish administration can be a lengthy process. Returns (financial and otherwise) have to be sent to the Diocese every 3 months and also to the Registrar. Fees returns have to be sent to the 3 Treasurers. This money is vital towards the upkeep of the churches, but the amount is dependent on the marriage and funeral services conducted. I do not do as much visiting as I used to do but I do take Home Communion out to those who ask for it and it is a very special part of my job. However, I cannot visit or help in any way unless I am informed of where I am needed and then I try to visit as soon as possible. Since arriving in this Diocese I have made it my policy to send a card to whoever is sick. I visit at Bodmin Hospital but I ring the wonderful chaplaincy teams at Treliske and Derriford and they always respond to my calls. I also try to remember to send a card on the first anniversary of the death of a loved one.

I should go to Clergy Chapter every month and to Diocesan Deanery Synod. There are opportunities to enjoy in the activities and events in the Cathedral. I have also to deal with a lot of post, much of which is from charities asking for help. Many of them are worthy causes and it is impossible to help them all. One never knows when and how you will be needed to use your priestly role. True, the dog collar can help, but often by just being there and by listening, you can help the people you meet. God has an uncanny way of having you in the right place at the right time. Being a priest can be a lonely job at times so thank you God for Alan, my strength and support and calmer of frequent nerves. Underpinning everything in a priest’s life must be their own prayer life. We are directed to say the Office morning and evening and to pray for our congregations, the sick, those in need of prayer and of course the world situations. Very often, when I reflect upon the day, I realise that I have left undone those things which I ought to have done and done those things which I ought not to have done and it is only with God’s help that I can do better. However, I exercise my ministry in what I believe is a quiet way and even though I don’t always seem it, I am usually well organised and do not have the need to look to others to step in and rescue me, although I am very grateful for their care. I have just written a small sketch of what being a priest if all about. I hope that it has been informative. Being a priest is a blessing and an indescribable privilege and gives my permission to say, God Bless You All. MARGARET

CAROL SINGING

Our sincere thanks to all who braved the cold this Christmas to sing carols for Cornwall Hospice Care. Although the number of singers on a couple of nights was fairly small they soldiered on manfully.

Our thanks, of course, to all who gave so generously as usual. A grand total of £320 was raised for this excellent organisation. Happy New Year to you all.

IN THE MARKET CALLED SUPER

Sir, And it came to pass that I journeyed into the city within the walls to buy food and raiment, and I entered into the market called super, where I beheld a woman walking towards me in a long garment called maxi, and long hair which did cover her face, and looked mucky.

And suddenly there appeared before me a small shopping bag on wheels which the woman pulled behind her back and which was hidden from me by her long garment.

And lo, I did fall over the shopping bag and travelled like unto Balaam when he went from Jericho to Jerusalem – on my ass, and my head did strike against the money changers table.

And I beheld all the stars in the firmament and I heard voices, some saying he looked not where he was going, some saying he was drunk and others saying that he was beset with devils.

Now when I had gathered my senses together I did not behold many people who were neither Pharisees nor Samaritans, as they did not pass by on the other side nor did they come to my aid, they just walked over me and trampled over my goods, which lay upon the ground. Bananas had curled up into the shape of black puddings, even the colour thereof, butter which stuck to me closer than a brother, and eggs and beetroot which did turn my raiment like unto Jacob’s coat.

Now I say unto you beware of these shopping bags on wheels that creep up on you like a thief in the night, they are a snare and delusion and should be banished from the face of the earth.

ST TUDY W I

Although our New Year doesn’t actually start until April, members have rejoined from this coming year. We have a variety of speakers, demonstrators, theatre trips and events already on the calendar, so watch the notice boards. New members are always welcome.

Our local Macmillan nurse Nicola Harley gave us an insight into her work. We often do not appreciate their expertise and the vital help they can give us along with our GPs and nurses. She judged our baskets of flowers, which were then distributed to members who could not attend the meeting.

Adrian Langdon with his choice of holiday photos will be joining us on Friday 19th February. We have always been amazed by his wonderful camera work, so do come and join us.

Lilian is arranging two theatre trips, so far, this year – Thursday 13th May to the Hall for Cornwall to see “Calendar Girls” – urgent booking as soon as you read this! And Thursday 26th August for “The Sound of Music” at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth. Again book as soon as possible as numbers have to be given far in advance.         JUDITH JASPER

THE FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH

Due to seasonal malfunctions, including snow and sickness, our January meeting was postponed.  However, further news regarding our 2010 programme of fundraisers will be forthcoming in due course.

In the meantime, we are all looking forward to our Friday March 5th Meal and Talk with wine in St Mabyn Village Hall when Giles Clotworthy will speak about the many years he spent working for the National Trust.   As always, there will be a vegetarian option and the event will start at 12noon for 12.30pm. Admission is £12 (£10 for Members) payable at the door.  To reserve a place please phone or email Chairman Liz Williams on 01208 841378 (GageWillms@aol.com) or Audrey Cooke on 01208 841607 (audreycooke@live.com).  If you would like to become a Member of Friends’ and benefit from concessions, you can either join on the day or contact Carol Grigg on 01208 841276.  Membership remains at only £10 per annum.

St Mabyn Pre-School

Angela Brown and Sharon Lewis would like to welcome you to St Mabyn Pre-School. Our opening times are Monday 9.10am -12.10pm and 12.10pm - 3.10pm. Children can stay all day. Parents to provide children with a packed lunch. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9.10am - 12.10pm. Our toddler group runs on Tuesday Mornings from 9.10am - 11.10am. All welcome

After a later start in the New Year than expected due to the snow and ice, we are happily back to normal. Our term the next few weeks is focused all around "Toys". The children have enjoyed talking about the toys they received from Father Christmas and are learning how they were made and how they work. After February half term our topic is all about the senses. The children will be given the opportunity to learn all about touch, taste, feel, smell and hear.

We had two successful fundraising events in December; a toy stall at the village hall and a table at the mistletoe fair. Our next fundraising event will be on Saturday 30th January at the village hall. We are holding a Quiz night. All welcome - please come along and support us. Look out for the posters around the village and on line. Further events to be confirmed. Watch this space.... Any further information about our sessions or any of our fundraising events, please call or pop in to any session.

St Mabyn Garden Club

In December members of the St Mabyn Garden enjoyed their Christmas
Party at the Village Hall.  Entertainment was provided by Crispin Payne with seasonal songs.  Thanks to John Lobb for keeping the old brain cells working with his tricky quiz. Special thanks to Hilda who cooked the delicious Christmas cake and Venning for proding the wine.

Unfortunately we had to cancel our January meeting with Peter Davies from Bodmin due to the inclement weather of snow and ice. For our next meeting Wednesday 10 February at St Mabyn Village Hall at 7.30pm, we will be welcoming Lorraine Turnbull who will be talking about growing vegetables.  Should be very interesting and looking forward to it.

ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL

Thank goodness the snow has gone (for now at least).  Pre-school eventually returned to the Village Hall on 11 January and the children had great fun playing in the snowy garden. The half-term break will be from 12 February returning on 22 February; toddlers will run on the Tuesday of half term from 9.15-11.15am (older siblings welcome too). The topic for this term is Me, Myself and I. We mentioned in the January issue of the Magazine that Pre-school funds had been greatly boosted and you may be interested to hear that our Asda bag packing raised £255! Commission from three events, AnA Multimedia Photography, Phoenix Cards and Pampered Chef amounted to £115.  The coffee morning held on 19 December raised £119 and the Pub Quiz on 23 December raised £90.

The Pre-school Trustees would like to say a big THANK YOU to The Cornish Arms, staff, parents and villagers for supporting our fund raising events in November and December.

If you love Bingo, then make a note in your diary "Saturday 6th Feb 7.30pm Bingo in St Tudy Village Hall".   Light refreshments will be available.

Jo Wotton has resigned from the Committee.  Jo will continue to support the Pre-school in her role as Master Cake Baker. Thank you Jo for all your help and support. The Trustees are very pleased to welcome on to the Committee, Rebecca Rose. Rebecca will take on the role of Fund Raising Organiser.

It is with regret I have to report that Liz Hayman has decided to resign from the staff at the Pre-school. Liz has been with the Pre-school for 9 years and seen many of our children through Pre-school and into school. She will be greatly missed as a very hard-working, loyal and friendly member of staff. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Liz for everything she has done for St Tudy Pre-school, and for her help and support to me as Chair over the last couple of years. There is a good side to this news however, in that Liz wants to join us on the Pre-school Committee, which is great news. As a result of Liz's resignation we now have a vacancy for a Pre-school Assistant. This post will initially be for between 10 and 15 hours per week, and would suit someone who is either working towards or who has their NVQ III in Early Years. For any further information, please contact Liz on 01208 850278 or visit our web-site at                             www.st-tudy-preschool.org.uk
