NEWS FROM ST MABYN SCHOOL

What a strange term so far! We came back to school straight after Easter Monday, and then had the day off on the Friday for the Royal Wedding!

We celebrated by making bunting, decorating plates and making our own Coats of Arms. On the Thursday Class 1 made everyone cupcakes which we ate at a special afternoon playtime in the Playing field. Thank you Class 1, they were lovely!

On Wednesday afternoons after school, some pupils of Class 3 stopped on to help residents from the village who are learning about computers. Some of them are complete novices and appreciate the help they are given by their young helpers.  Class 3 have visited Truro Museum for a workshop about the Iron Age. They made clay pots, ground wheat for bread and tried their hand at weaving.

We had an HMI Inspection for English and although we are waiting for the published results we can tell you that we are very pleased with many of the very positive comments made about our school; ranging from our creative curriculum with the use of outside visitors through to how we collate and use our data to inform future practice.

School camp kicked off on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of June for years 3, 4, 5 and 6 at both St Mabyn and St Tudy schools at Porthpean Camp near St Austell. More information on how that went in next month’s magazine.

At the end of that week, on the Friday, Class 2 from both schools enjoyed a visit to the Minack to see Fantastic Mr Fox.  On Saturday it was the Church fete where our children demonstrated some excellent Maypole dancing.

DEAR FRIENDS,

It may sound strange for a Methodist Minister to state that he has a great respect for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rev. Rowan Williams but it is a fact.  Whilst I was training for my present role in the mid 1990’s he came to lecture twice at the ecumenical training college which I attended in Birmingham when he was the Bishop of Wales.  On both occasions he kept our attention for a full 1½ hours on relevant topics for which he had no notes.  Hence for me it is good to hear of him challenging the proposals of our Coalition Government. This is consistent with being in a leadership position in the Church and parallels the challenges of the Old Testament Prophets and Jesus. In the past few weeks I have found myself drawn into conversations about the future direction of the administration of our local Schools prompted by the Government White Paper which proposes radical changes – particularly from April 2012.  Alongside this, there are wide ranging reforms being proposed for Local Government, the Health Service, the Welfare and Benefits system, our Defence Services and others such as the Coastguard Service.  Employees in all of these services have a right to be concerned about their futures and long-term security. Add to the above the potential increase in unemployment in our Service and manufacturing industries because of the lack of money in our economy.  All of this means that many are feeling de-motivated and anxious about the future. I find myself discovering the proposals in a piecemeal way, and lacking in an overall vision of how the future will be – the ‘bigger picture’ as I call it.  I may be wrong, but it looks as though we are being led to a future which is dominated by civil servant led agencies servicing competing small business units such as local schools and doctors’ surgeries.

In the 6th century BC Ezekiel challenged the Babylonian and Jewish leaders by saying to those political leaders whom he saw as ‘Shepherds of the people’ – “You take care of yourselves, but never tend the sheep.....You have not taken care of the weak ones, healed those that are sick, bandaged those that are hurt. Instead, you treated them cruelly” (Ezekiel 34 v2 & 4).

Some 600 years later Jesus in the midst of competing philosophies for living said- “I have come in order that you might have life – life in all its fullness.  I am the good          shepherd, who is willing to die for the sheep.”        (John 10 v10, 11). I think we all need to be concerned about the future, and need to be questioning and challenging our politicians about their ‘Shepherding’ of us.  Are we really being led in a caring way to ‘abundant pastures’ – which is the Christian value that has underpinned so many government initiatives over the past 200 years at least?

                                                        EVERY BLESSING, BRYAN EDE

ALLEN VALLEY SINGERS

On May 21st, we sang a varied programme at St. Merryn’s Church Hall, raising money for necessary church repairs, which was promoted by Ann Woods, one of our members and who also is a member of the church congregation.

We look forward to singing at two weddings in July, especially as it is likely that our new uniforms will be ready for these two important and joyous events.

On July 9th, we will be also singing at the British Legion Fete at Prideaux Place in Padstow, so a busy summer lies ahead.  If you would like to join the Allen Valley Singers, please contact our Musical Director, Janette Man, telephone 01208 841784. Bookings and all other queries to our Chairman Audrey Warne, Telephone 01208 778840

ST TUDY CHURCH FETE: 21 MAY

The church Fete this year, held at the home of Mr and Mrs Micky Madden, Butts Parc, was considered a success despite the unappealing weather.  We are grateful to Ed Coode, Triple World Rowing Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist, for opening the event and spending his afternoon with us.

Without the enthusiasm and efforts of all those who were in charge of stalls and the catering we could not have made a profit for Church funds of £2033.  We are most indebted however to Micky and Gelda Madden for putting their home at our disposal for the day and for the careful forward planning so essential to the smooth operation of the day. Their management of the many details that eased the way for all those who attended helped to make the occasion an enjoyable social event.                                       GEOFFREY GIBBONS

MICHAELSTOW PCC FOR 2011/12

At the Annual Meeting the following were elected as members and officers of the PCC for this year:-

Vice Chairman Gilly ffrench Blake (tel. 850070)

Secretary Josie Parfitt   (tel. 850652)

Anthony ffrench Blake kindly agreed to continue to act as our Treasurer

The Churchwardens are David Ford (tel. 851854) and Josie Parfitt (tel. 850652)

It will be noted that Josie has been talked into filling two posts; such is the shortage of people able, willing and qualified to take office.

Regarding the future of the parish, it has been agreed in principle that we will come under the North Cornwall Cluster of Churches, but to what extent we will be integrated with that organisation and exactly how this will operate in practice has still to be discussed and agreement reached by all concerned. DAVID FORD

ST TUDY PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council held its AGM on Wednesday 25th May. Mr Brian
Lamerton was unanimously re-elected as Chairman and Mr Chris Selby as Vice Chairman.

A planning application for the construction of a 3/4 bedroom dormer
bungalow at Bodinnick Parc was not supported by the Council. The proposed construction overlooked other property's gardens, was ill connected to an existing garage and was not in line with other bungalows in Bodinnick Road.

The regular Council meetings are held in the Village Hall at 7pm on the
last Wednesday of each month except in the months of August and December. You are welcome to attend and to raise any matter of concern at the beginning of a meeting.    MEV SHELLEY

ST TUDY CARNIVAL - SATURDAY 9TH JULY 2011

The Carnival Committee would like to ask members of the three parishes to come along and support the Carnival; more entries would be great, or just come along and see the high standard of those we do have, some artistic, others just fun. You don’t have to spend ages doing it; simple can be effective and remember, it is the taking part that counts. There is any entry form on the flier that has come with the magazine and we urge you to complete this and bring it to the registration tent by 6pm as the admin team only has 5/10 minutes to prepare the cards ready for the judges. The committee has agreed that the walkers will stop at Norman’s Way as parents and organisations have said that the young children get tired and find the procession a little too far.

Camelford Silver Band and Bideford Pipe Band, together with the colourful Truro School of Samba, will entertain you together with all the entrants! After the prize-giving we have Right On Cue to entertain us at the Village Hall from 8.00pm.

Raffle tickets are on sale from committee members ahead of the Carnival and our raffle ticket sellers will be on hand at the entrance to the playing field on Carnival night. We have a first prize of £100, second prize a Hamper and third prize a £25 Voucher, along with other great prizes. The raffle will be drawn on the field and prize-winners will be notified, a list will be put on the Post Office notice board. Anyone wishing to make enquiries can call 850391/850857 or email simmorose@btinternet.com.

As a polite request, could we ask that cyclists do not follow the procession in order to safeguard themselves and the entrants.  Thank you.

On Wednesday 6th July from 6.30pm we will be having a Rounders Evening on St Tudy Playing Field, to which all ages are welcome (weather permitting).

MOOR HARMONY NORTH CORNWALL

Moor Harmony is a recently formed Ladies’ Barbershop chorus. We are a

small group who have a great time during our rehearsals; we practise

singing techniques and how to improve our voices whilst learning how to

sing in 4 part harmony barbershop style.

In fact, we enjoy our sessions so much and have been so sorry to miss

so many of them due to all the Monday Bank holidays that we have decided to CHANGE OUR REHEARSAL NIGHT TO TUESDAYS FROM THE 5th JULY. We have already had our first public performance; a guest spot at a concert in Helland Village Hall which we all greatly enjoyed. We were

delighted to receive so many lovely compliments upon our singing.

We are busy practising now and are planning on further performances

during the summer. If you are a lady, who loves to sing, please come

along to our rehearsals and try us out. All abilities and ages (over 16)

are welcome.  We meet from 7p.m until 10p.m every Tuesday at Helland Village Hall. We are a friendly bunch who would love to see you there. Contact Secretary Pauline Gobbitt for more information-: Telephone 01208851872 or e-mail moorharmony@live.co.uk

ST MABYN GARDEN CLUB - SPRING TRIP TO ARLINGTON COURT, BARNSTSTAPLE

As members and friends stepped out of the coach, we were greeted by a marvellous array of beautiful trees clothed in many shades of green.  The grounds of Arlington Court have a very natural feel about them accentuated by groups of foliage and the curved driveways and paths revealing a vista of open green meadows.  Due to the rain at the start of the visit the exploration of the house was a priority.  Arlington Court is a graceful house full of memorabilia, much of which has been collected by Chichester family’s marine travels all over the world.  Although the house is reminiscent of a bygone era of wealth and elegance it retains the feeling of a lived in family home.  The house and estate after 500 years of ownership by the Chichester family was handed over to the National Trust in 1949.

The Stable Block is the jewel in the crown and houses a magnificent collection of carriages  including a coach in which it was possible for two passengers to lie flat for overnight travel;  possibly the forerunner of the sleeper car on a train!  A recent acquisition is the huge Speaker’s State Coach, which has been used by the Speaker of the House of Commons on State occasions.  It was built circa 1698 for King William III and has been painstakingly restored retaining original structure and materials where possible, revealing the intricate gilded carving of the bodywork and vibrant colours of the painted panels.  The gardens were created in the picturesque style of early 19th century with the large lawns leading into the paths where the many varieties of plants and shrubbery can be appreciated.  The Kitchen Garden has now been fully restored and now fruit, vegetables and beautiful flowers are growing in abundance.

Though the weather had not been too kind for our visit to Arlington Court, it was agreed that it had been very enjoyable and many members are now looking forward to September for the club’s visit to Marsh Villa Gardens, Par. For more details for the Marsh Villa trip, and our programme of speakers for 2011/12 contact Angela Bunney 01208 841511.
