FIRST CLICK AT ST MABYN

Twelve courageous over 55’s, recruited by Audrey Cooke, have been venturing into the Computer room at St Mabyn School, by kind permission of Karen Holmes, Head teacher. The group have been spending three weekly meetings following the BBC First Click programme to learn how to use the Keyboard and Mouse; send and receive email; use the Internet Safely.

Each group member has been supported by his or her own Buddy. These are six volunteers from the village and children from the school, Brook Gammon, Gwilym Jones, Vicki Bracken and William Burton.  Adult volunteer Buddies are Mike Haywood, Yvonne White, Ian and Kitty Hotchkiss, Agnes Hoskin plus Audrey Cooke. The rapport between Learners and Buddies has been fantastic and Karen has made everyone feel comfortable when working outside their comfort zone. Our oldest members are 80+, so you need never stop learning!

The idea and support for this course comes from Nina Davey at Radio Cornwall, as part of their Community Service Volunteers programme. Also, it fits in with the Church’s aim to meet the needs of the community. If you want to learn more visit www.bbc.co.uk/firstclick, www.bbc.co.uk/webwise, or contact Nina Davey on 01872275421.                                          RICHARD JENKIN (St Mabyn PCC)

Bev and Rosemary would like to say a very big THANK YOU to everyone who helped at, or supported, our coffee morning. You kindly raised £316.35. The quilt was won by Don Clark.

We are so very grateful to family, friends, villagers for sponsoring this worthwhile cause and it appears that the combined Cornwall/ Oxfordshire Moonwalk Team, "The Corncots”, are set to raise their £2,000 target for Breast Cancer from the coffee morning money and offline and online sponsorship.
The team completed The Moonwalk on the night of 14th May in 7 1/2 hours, spurred on by the fantastic atmosphere and the encouraging messages being sent throughout the night!

ST TUDY PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council met on Wednesday 27th April. The Community Police
Officer, Lloyd Painter, attended to discuss policing matters affecting St
Tudy. Reported crimes in St Tudy were: 2008 to 2009 – 9; 2009 to 2010 – 12;
2010 to 2011 – 10. Recent crimes included thefts of garden ornaments, jewellery and a mobile phone and there were three cases of criminal damage to cars and a domestic assault.

Scrap metals are very valuable nowadays. To foil opportunist thieves, the
Police ask that any metal scrap should not be left in full sight on driveways.
Due to the high cost of domestic heating oil, thieves are now stealing oil
from domestic oil tanks. Padlocking the filler cap may be a discouragement to
theft but some thieves are drilling a hole in the tank to extract the oil. The Police make a special visit to the centre of St Tudy at 2pm on the third Wednesday of each month. Similar visits in other villages appear popular when the police can answer queries or discuss issues of concern.

The Parish Council held an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday 4th May to deal with planning applications. The Council examined and supported these
applications:

Miss Sue Handford, Hendra Cottage. Demolition of a single storey extension
and construction of a two storey extension with conservatory and balcony over.
Mr Williams, Tre-Burclea, Bodinnick Road. Construction of a bungalow.
Mr Adrian Sleep, Bronsley, Bodinnick Road. Construction of a dwelling.

The regular meetings of the St Tudy Parish Council are held in the Village
Hall at 7pm on the last Wednesday of each month, (excepting August and
December). Members of the public are welcome to attend.

ST TUDY GARDEN PRODUCE ASSOCIATION

We had a really lovely trip on the May Day Bank Holiday, Monday 2nd May.  We set off in the coach at 10 o'clock, arriving an hour later at Carnon Downs Garden Centre.  This is a huge place!  It has a wonderful selection of everything you can think of for the garden - and more!  It also has a very good cafeteria - very popular!  We left at 12.30 for the onward journey to Trebah Garden.  Although it's set in a steep valley, not all the paths at Trebah are too strenuous.  The candelabra primroses made a stunning display tumbling down the stream, the gunera were shooting up strongly, great drifts of bluebells painted a sea of blue between the many coloured rhododendrons and the largest handkerchief tree in the UK was in full bloom.  Down at the beach, where many Americans departed for Omaha Beach in the D Day landings, the tide was in - and the waves battering the shore.  It was a bit breezy there!  But the rest of the garden was so peaceful and beautiful and the restaurant offered a really good selection of meals.  Needless to add, the coach on the way home had quite a lot of plants and other purchases from both places.

The plant sale was held on Saturday 7th May.  Despite threatening skies early in the morning, the weather stayed dry and we had quite a lot of customers to buy a good selection of plants and then go into the Clink for coffee.   With plants, coffee and raffle we made just over £250, half of which will go to the Garden Club and half to the Community Shop funds. Thanks to those who helped and those who brought plants.

Don't forget to let me know that you're entering the hanging baskets and tubs in the village this year - 850222.   The judges are looking forward to it!

ST TUDY CARNIVAL

Carnival season is fast approaching and so, with that in mind, here's a reminder that our own village Carnival will be held on Saturday 9th July when we will gather on the playing field from 5.30pm.

The crowning of our royalty took place at the Church Fete on 21st May and we are sure Yasmin, Chloe, Max, Lucy and Amy will enjoy the Carnival.

If anyone has trophies which need to be returned, please contact Kathy on 850391 or Rosemary on 850857.  We will be pleased to receive them or arrange collection.

ST TUDY COMMUNITY SHOP

The shop opened on Good Friday, having been re-stocked overnight by volunteers.  A continuous stream of delighted customers came through the door, the press turned up and the whole venture is a huge success.  Of course, there's still a long way to go!  Plans for the new premises next to the Village Hall have been presented to the village and the share offer will be launched on 12th June.

Fundraising continues apace with the Derby Draw Coffee Morning at Quies Cottage on Thursday 2nd June from 10 to 11.30, and the Safari Supper on Saturday 18th June.  Tickets for the supper are available from the shop at £12.50 each, limited to 100 people.  St Tudy Tea Towels are also available either from the shop or from Jane and Bob King at £3 each or 2 for £5.  The stall at Cedar Croft Farmers' Market did a steady trade in these - but there are still some for sale!

All the "staff" are volunteers.  More helpers are always required, even for shelf stacking and cleaning if the intricacy of the till doesn't appeal! The atmosphere is one of enthusiasm and fun - so do please continue to support your local Village Community Shop in whatever way you can!       BOB KING

ST TUDY COMMUNITY SHOP

Last night I attended a meeting of the Community Shop Committee.  As Chairman of the Steering Committee, I represented the Steering Group’s activities at this particular meeting.

The Shop Committee comprises of the good folk that actually run the daily activities of the shop.  It became apparent just how much organisation, work and commitment these people have already contributed to the running of the shop during these early days.  Many people have already put so much effort towards the Community Shop, but I was humbled by the amount of effort and energy being demonstrated by these good people.  If the parishioners of St Tudy can also contribute the same level of support, demonstrated at this meeting last night, the Community Shop stands to be a great success.

It would be wrong to mention specific names, but may I offer a very big “thank you” to you all for your commitment and hard work!                                                                       IAN HODGES

ST MABYN ROYAL WEDDING PARTY

The organisers of the Royal Wedding Party held in St Mabyn Village Hall would like to thank all those who contributed to a very successful afternoon. The tables were loaded down with plates of sandwiches, cakes, pasties and all types of tasty bites generously brought along. Many thanks to those who contributed both with the food and financially and also many thanks to Joe and Laura at the Post Office and shop for arranging the collection box. It was lovely to see so many people there and enjoying the food, company and the weather! Many thanks to Mike Haywood for the marvellous music he played throughout the afternoon, Colin Hyde for putting up the bunting and not forgetting the helpers in the kitchen without whom the afternoon could not have gone ahead.

NEW ST TUDY SCHOOL NEWS

The Governors recently held a meeting for parents and community members to update everyone about the new school and repairs to the current school building.   Many of you will have heard on the BBC and local radio that the funding for a new school has been withdrawn. This funding was originally offered in 2005 by the last government on condition that the new school was built by 31 March 2011.  All kinds of problems have prevented this, but the project is far from dead. The governors and head teacher have attended meetings with both the Diocese and Cornwall Council.  Of course, there is now a freeze on spending across the whole country.  No new schools are being built this year.  However, Cornwall Council and the Diocesan still support the project enthusiastically and designs are well advanced so we can be first in line to apply for new funding as soon as this comes on-stream. No one should feel dispirited about our chances for a new school which is so badly needed.  Indeed, we have received encouragement from the highest level.

First came a letter from David Cameron who seeks to reassure us in St Tudy that this government will continue to protect rural schools from any threat of closure. “The Government is seeking to strengthen the position for good, small schools,” he writes. “Furthermore, under the current legislation…there is a general presumption against the closure of rural schools.”  Even more encouraging is a subsequent letter from Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education: “I am pleased to hear that the local authority and the school are working together to deliver a replacement building for this very good school. “On 5th July (2010) I announced a review of all areas of DfE capital spending. Until the review concludes we are unable to make promises about any specific funding streams after March 2011. Once the outcome of the capital review is known, St Tudy School will be well placed, given the support of the local authority, to be a leading priority for access to any capital funding announced for the 2011-15 spending review period.”

Given the level of support at local and national level, the Governors are confident that we will succeed as soon as funding becomes available again. The governors will continue to work with both the Diocese and Cornwall Council to put pressure on the government, keeping up the momentum for our bid. Due to the fact that a new school will not be built, probably for at least two years, the governors have allocated money for repairs to the existing building.  This will include new boilers and radiators for the school, repairs to the guttering and windows and improvements to the inside of the canteen building. Suggestions were also received about improving the canteen space further, by asking the Playing Field Association for land, to have a greater area for the Foundation stage children to play outside. This might include a covered area, gardening space and a soft play area. The governors will be formally approaching the Playing Field Association about this and improvements to the playground.

Whilst governors and staff are making every effort to continue to work with the space that we have it was felt by some parents that there was still a very negative feel towards our school. An example was given that some people in the village still think that the school would be closing. This has had a negative effect on both numbers at the Pre-School and also to the school itself. Everyone is working as hard as possible to continue to give the children at our school the highest level of education – despite the cramped surroundings. We hope that by seeing investment being made in the school building, it will be clear to everyone, that our school is not closing our school is here to stay! Can I please remind everyone that if you wish to discuss any of the issues you are more than welcome to talk to myself, or any of our governors – Fiona Bate, Chris Mugford, Fiona Cambouropoulos, Victoria Nankivell and Sarah Northcott as Chair. She can also be contacted on chairofgovernors@st-tudy.cornwall.sch.uk

MICHAELSTOW

To celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday 29th April, a tea party was held on the Parish Green. There was an abundance of food and the weather was kind to us. During the proceedings, Mrs Pauline Dennis (Vice-Chairman Parish Council) presented a souvenir mug to children of the parish. (There are some 50 in all) – thank you. It was very encouraging to see so many parishioners gathered together, well over 70. Once again – thank you Maureen (Narraway) and family for promoting and co-ordinating this event. Also our thanks to Mrs Una Yeomans for compiling and obtaining the names, ages and addresses of the children etc. Last but not least, thank you parishioners for the offers of help with food, but best of all coming together and meeting each other on the day, which gives satisfaction and encouragement to those behind the scene helpers who organised this gathering and also your councillors, who do work on your behalf to care for Michaelstow Parish. G.F.Y. CHAIRMAN

ST MABYN GARDEN CLUB

The 2011 AGM was held in March with a very good attendance of members. Venning Davey kindly agreed to continue as President for the forthcoming year. John Lobb was unanimously re-elected as Chairman, as were Vice-Chair Fiona Murphy, Treasurer Anne Caldwell and Secretary Angela Bunney. After the business of the AGM had been completed, members Joanne and Colin Hyde gave us a treat by showing their colourful slides of their holiday in New Zealand. The pictures captured the beauty of this country and the vast tracts of emptiness New Zealand has to offer. Many thanks to Jo and Colin for such an interesting evening.

For our May meeting, we were very lucky to get Wadebridge’s own Adrian Langdon, who is well known for this photography and knowledge of Cornwall’s wildlife. His slides on the Camel Estuary varied from otters to birds to badgers, even to a very large basking shark just off the coast. I particularly liked the birds in flight. Adrian accompanied his slides with information and some very amusing anecdotes. (If you happen to come across Adrian don’t forget to ask him about his wildlife encounter on Rough Tor!) Tea and biscuits were then served by the tea hostesses whose work every month is greatly appreciated by the thirsty members.

The Garden Club is on holiday until Wednesday 14th September when we shall be going to Marsh Villa Gardens in Par, St Austell. Members to meet at 9.30am at the bus stop shelter and take own cars. This is a morning trip as it will give members the opportunity to spend the whole day out elsewhere if they wished. We start our meetings in St Mabyn Hall on Wednesday 12th October with a visit from George Kestell on Propagation. Should be very interesting.  For more details about anything above please contact the secretary, Angela Bunney on 01208 841511. Please note annual subscription is still only £5.

DEAR FRIENDS,

In the news is the parliamentary debate about the Health Service reforms.  Our Health Service seems to be in a state of constant flux with the number of reforms and re-organisations which have been thrust upon it in recent years.  It would be interesting to talk with someone who can remember the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948 to see whether the reforms are getting us nearer to the original concept, or are ‘eroding’ the service which was introduced. It may well be that as things are introduced into our legislation we are ‘eroding’ our society and changing it gradually.  The impact of ‘gradual erosion’ is that over a period of time a situation changes in such a way that it becomes unrecognizable when compared to the original. One example of this is the change in the Bank Holiday pattern in this country, which was originally modelled on the Christian Calendar.  For economic reasons and ease of planning we ‘eroded’ our holiday pattern by replacing Whit Monday, with the late Spring Bank Holiday which was fixed for the last Monday in May some years ago.  This year this has caused some to complain that the Bank Holidays are too close together, all the result of our doubtful human wisdom. In June the Christian Church will be celebrating Pentecost Sunday or Whit Sunday as some call it, on Sunday 12th June and in former days this would have included a Bank Holiday on the following day just 50 days after the Easter Bank Holiday.  These dates are calculated by the phasing of the moon and can be calculated years ahead for planning purposes.  I have a chart giving these dates up until 2025.

Pentecost is both a Jewish Celebration of the Corn Harvest and the giving of the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai, and the Christian Festival of the Birth of the Christian Church and the consequent culture of which we are all the benefactors.  The first Christians experienced their empowering by God through his Holy Spirit at the time of the Pentecost Festival after the first Easter.  This was recognised in many parts of the country with parades, feasts and fairs with the associated Bank Holiday. In the ‘erosion’ of the Holiday pattern we have caused the loss of some of the celebrations and the loss of the recognition to a large extent of this Christian Festival.  It may seem small but all ‘erosive’ action begins in small ways and is gradual, but can have serious consequences.  Some of the changes in our laws have also ‘eroded’ the intentions of the Ten Commandments as a basis for honest and just community living. The messages associated with the Christian Church are important for all of us as individuals and members of community.  Perhaps we should all look at them again, and take steps to ensure that there is ‘no erosion’ of them. Every Blessing.

BRYAN EDE - METHODIST MINISTER

SAFARI SUPPER INCLUDING BBQ SAT 18TH JUNE IN AID OF ST TUDY COMMUNITY SHOP

There are lots of rumours flying around,  but I heard it was to be a cut above the rest, starting with drinks, served by butlers  off heirloom silver platters at Vanessa Wilkins, The Old Rectory, - but that could just be someone’s wild imagination of course. Then it’s off down Tremeer Lane to Maggie Lobb’s for starters (or should we say entrees, perhaps?) – will they be French, or in French, will we even recognise them, and has she been secretly polishing her French conversation as a surprise?? Who knows what will happen!!

The BBQ will sizzle at Butts Parc in Redvale Rd with Mickey Madden brandishing the irons (not golf I hope, or anything to do with horses) and, I’m told, sporting his best “pinny”.  I hear word is going round that to comply with Health and Safety they might have to ask Phil Tizzard to stand by with his fire engine! It seems Chris Hawkins will be chairing the puddings within staggering distance at Lorgan, - just handy for those who may overdo the booze or BBQ.

They tell me the challenge is then to burn it all off with a brisk jog to Hooters, the Hodges Home up Hengar Lane (try saying that after too many at Vanessa’s!) Here will be comfy armchairs to collapse into with cheese platter and gallons of coffee to ease it all down. There will be a handsome raffle, tickets available at the shop, which will be drawn at “Hooters”.

A limited number of Safari Supper tickets £12.50 will also be on sale at the shop, and each ticket will be entered into an automatic draw on the night for a bottle of Champagne.  The star prize is a lunch or dinner for two, plus a glass of fizz at Nathan Outlaw's Seafood and Grill at the St Enodoc Hotel, Rock.  Nathan recently received his second Michelin star for his “fine dining” restaurant at the same hotel.

Supper will start 6.30pm – 7.30pm.  Hope you all have a lovely time! Nearer the day Lorraine Rooke or Pam Free will have information on access to the venues for anyone with disability, 850029 or 850450 respectively.  I must say, I did enjoy the Tall Tales at our last fundraising “do” – very inspiring!

ST MABYN PARISH COUNCIL

Notes from the agreed minutes of St Mabyn Parish Council Tuesday, 5th April 2011.  Public Session:  The Vice Chairman invited the member of the public to address the Council, if he so wished.  Mr Hawkey had submitted a recent planning application (PA11/00777 Mr Mike Rutgers, Middle Treworder Farm, Egloshayle – solar farm. The Parish Council objected for various reasons (many discussed that evening at the open meeting) to the planning application and forwarded their objections to Cornwall Council Planning Office.

Community Network Meeting:  The Clerk and Cllr Mrs A Bunney attended the Wadebridge & Padstow Community Network Meeting on the 24th March that had been organised to discuss the Cornwall Council Core Strategy Options – Planning for the Future.  Councillors were advised of the contents of the document and the proposed changes to government targets, and building for the future in urban and rural communities.  Councillors felt that no further development was required in St Mabyn until the majority of the new properties at Mabena Lea had been sold, and this housing was possibly sufficient to accommodate the parish for the next five years.

Correspondence: Cornwall Council – Response from Cllr M Kazmarek regarding the Homechoice allocation process for Mabena Lea.  Consultation on the future of household waste collection and recycling.  Cllr Ludgate, Blisland Parish Council – Invite to discuss localism amongst adjoining rural parishes within the Bodmin and Wadebridge Community Networks.

To renew the Agency Agreement with Cornwall Council for Longstone:  The Clerk was awaiting a response from Cornwall Council as to whether or not this work could be extended to include the strip of grass from the junction to the site of the old filling station. Standing Orders, Financial Regulations & Risk Assessment (update on the meeting held on the 14th March 2011):  The policies had now been reviewed and updated and will be presented for the Chairman to sign in May 2011. To fill vacancies on the Parish Council:  Ongoing. Community Plan (update – setting up of a Steering Group):  Plans in hand. Request by Keltie Seaber (Extended Services) to meet with the Parish Council date set for  7th June 7.30 p.m. Date of next meeting:  7th June in the Village Hall.  Parishioners are most welcome to attend.  Any concerns or item for discussion please put in writing or send by email to the Clerk prior to the meeting. (9 days before the next meeting.)  Thank you.
