Dear Friends
When I was little, my mum tells me, I ran home from Sunday School, yelling ‘the Holy Ghost is coming’! Apparently our teacher had been telling us about the Holy Ghost and it had somehow frightened me. Today, in the Methodist Church, we tend to use the term ‘Holy Spirit’ which is perhaps less frightening. But what is this Holy Spirit? Perhaps the easiest way to explain it is to liken it to alcoholic drinks called ‘spirits’ which are made up of many ingredients which are then filtered out leaving behind their natural essence and flavour or their ‘spirit’. So the Holy Spirit is the natural essence and flavour of God.
As Pentecost or Whit Sunday approaches we focus on the time when Jesus sent his Holy Spirit upon the disciples. When they were ‘filled’ with this Holy Spirit they were given some of the powers and abilities, which Jesus had and these enabled them to continue Jesus’ ministry. It is a wonderful gift, which is still being given to the people of God to enable us to continue his work and without it the church and the world would be a poorer place. When we receive the Holy Spirit we are led to do things we wouldn’t otherwise attempt; it leads us to be more involved in the church and in the community; it leads us to stand up for what we believe. Everything good has at sometime been fought for by people willing to leave their comfort zones and the fight is made easier when they are filled with the Holy Spirit because with a little bit of God inside us everything is possible.
I guess the difference between alcoholic spirits and the Holy Spirit is that when we drink alcohol we think we can do anything. When we receive the Holy Spirit we really can do anything. May God fill you with the Holy Spirit. STELLA

We will be into our 2009-2010 programme with this issue when Richard Austin, the Wadebridge Sculptor, was our first speaker/demonstrator in April. (Have you all spoken to his “gentleman” on the seat at Trelawney?!)
On Wednesday 13th May, our friends from Egloshayle, Trevanson and St Issey and Little Petherick Wis are joining us for our group meeting. Lady Mary Holborrow is our guest speaker and Christine Woolf’s drama group will entertain us. A Cornish theme will run throughout the evening.
On Friday 15th May, Mr Tappin of Bonhams Auctioneers, Par will be valuing and talking about our antiques. Someone usually has a pleasant surprise at these evenings, so why not come along and see what our WI is all about. New members are always welcome. * * * * * * * * *
WEDNESDAY COFFEE MORNINGS
These will commence on Wednesday 6th May and continue until the autumn. Offers of assistance to take charge of some of the Coffee Mornings through the summer would be most welcome. Please contact me at 851267 if you are willing to help. HAZEL GIBBONS * * * * * * * * *FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH
Our 2009 AGM will take place on Thursday 7th May at 6.30 for 7pm in St Mabyn Village Hall. Everyone is welcome to join us for a friendly social occasion with wine and cheese.
The forthcoming Jazz on the Green with Bodmin College Jazz Orchestra will now take place on Saturday 11th July (6.30-9pm.) This will be their last performance of the school year and half the proceeds will go to the Orchestra, which has two years in which to raise the money for their tour of the USA in 2010. The other half will go to The Friends of St Mabyn Church. Also in the pipeline is a Friends' BBQ at Menkee hosted by Liz and Gage Williams and, during the autumn, a Quiz Night will be held in St Mabyn Village Hall. Further details for these events will be published later.
Finally, we hope very much that by the time the May edition of The Magazine is published Reverend Margaret will be well on the way to recovering from treatment in hospital. She is in everyone's thoughts and prayers and we wish her a relaxing and peaceful period of convalescence. For Friends of St Mabyn Church membership enquiries please contact Carol Grigg 01208 841276
WORLD PREMIERE
At the conclusion of the Patronal Festival service in St Tudy Church on Sunday 10th May, a specially commissioned piece of organ music will have its first performance. Andrew Fletcher was invited to compose a FINALE for this service at St Tudy Church based on the hymn tune Engelberg by Charles Villiers Stanford. Andrew Fletcher who lives in the Midlands is Organ Advisor to the Diocese of Worcester and organist at the University of Birmingham.

REPORT FOR MICHAELSTOW AGM 1st April at Michaelstow Church
Even though we have had a quiet year at Michaelstow we have maintained our loyal congregation. During the year we have celebrated the usual festivals and they have all been quite well attended. The Fete once again was also successful. A big thank you to all who organised it and worked so hard. A big thank you also to Monty and Angela for allowing us the use of their garden.
Services have been maintained and a big thank you to Peter and the St Petroc’s team for all they have done. We had several weeks when Peter was recovering from a hip operation but we were lucky to have help from other sources. Michael Baxter helped out with the organ playing until Christmas. It was much appreciated.
My thanks go also to Josie for her work as secretary and to everyone else for all the work they do often behind the scenes.
One of the highlights of the year was the Harvest Festival. A delightful lunch was held and Michaelstow was certainly seen as a place of great hospitality. Alan Sanders also proved himself to be a natural auctioneer. Sadly Neva Prout died during the year.
Now I must take the opportunity to thank the loyal people of Michaelstow. Thank you Gilly for helping to organise the fete, thank you John E C for looking after all the money both in the church and the benefice. Thank you Josie for acting as Secretary. Thank you to all who look after the church, arrange the flowers, act as Sidespersons etc. In other words, thank you everyone. I have left David until last. As the only Churchwarden, he is valiantly looking after this wonderful church and me also. I am extremely grateful.
Having such a beautiful church at the heart of Michaelstow is a reminder to everyone that God’s purpose in this place and at this time is being worked out. May we in whatever way we can, continue to serve God in love and trust and to the best of our abilities. May God bless you all. MARGARET
ST TUDY CARNIVAL 2009

If you have any questions about what would be involved, please contact either Caroline Pearce on 850385 or Kathy Hillson on 850391. A dress allowance is available.
Names will be drawn out of a hat at the Coffee Morning, which will give every entrant a fair chance. Thank you for your support.
* * * * * * * * *YOGA
I am moving with my yoga group to a new venue from 21st April onwards. It will still be on Tuesday mornings, between 9.15 and 10.45am, but now in a beautiful and tranquil barn in St Tudy, with a nice wooden floor and a high ceiling, warm and clean – the ideal place to do yoga. The teaching is friendly and supportive. Everybody will be welcome: whatever age or ability. Small group. The space will accommodate up to 10 students. If you are interested, please call Elke Tanner tel. 01208 850012.

binding Stone Update
At the beginning of April, the Binding Stone Fund account stood at £623.27. From this we have allocated £250 for the Playing Field Trust towards a new piece of play equipment, £150 for the Allotment Society to help with setting up costs and £50 to the Garden Produce Association for a new cup. This leaves £173.27 in the account. To date we have donated £4,411.80 to village organisations from the fund. We have also decided that it is time to reduce the price of the remaining books. They are now available from the Post Office, or Judith Jasper or Sue Dibble for £2.50 each. The Binding Stone Fund Committee.
FROM REVEREND MARGARET
As I write this Magazine contribution, I am preparing to go into hospital in Derriford, Plymouth on Maundy Thursday. I shall on my return home be convalescing for some weeks. During this period of time if there are any urgent matters arising, please contact the Churchwardens initially. They are at St Tudy Ken Alford (851261) and Peter Trusler (850358), at St Mabyn John Lobb (841581) and Colin Hyde (841546) and Michaelstow David Ford (851854) and Kate Martin (851418). They have details of all the covering of the services etc. Visitors to the Rectory will be welcome.
Since writing my Magazine article, I have spent several days in Derriford undergoing surgery. I am now home again and recuperating but will have to take things easy for some weeks. I would like to thank everyone who has sent me cards, flowers and good wishes. Alan is a wonderful “hausfrau” and will not let me do anything. Thank you again

Web Master Required Are you a wizz on the computer, can you build a web site and regularly update a site? Then St Tudy needs you! Lawrence Rooke our current web master has decided to stand down. The site was built by Lawrence in 2001. We now need somebody else with the necessary skills to become the 'master'. ST MABYN GARDEN CLUB
For our March meeting we were given a very interesting talk with slides on bamboos by Michael Bell of Wadebridge. We were amazed how many varieties and colours are available. Michael brought with him a selection of bamboos in pot and showed us some walking sticks and other items made out of bamboo. One specimen was a foot wide and though just 4 foot high, it will grow to well over a hundred feet. Cornwall’s moist and warm climates suits the growing of bamboos and I am sure that by the end of the evening many of our members were thinking of visiting a garden centre to purchase a bamboo or two!
On Wednesday 13th May at 7.30pm in St Mabyn Village Hall, Beryl Davies will give a talk on cottage gardens; always a popular subject.
On Thursday 14th May, we are going to Knightshayes Court, near Tiverton. The coach leaves St Mabyn bus shelter at 9.15am and we leave Knightshayes Court at 4pm, so we should not be too late getting back. If you are a National Trust member, it will be £10.50 for the coach. For non National Trust members, the cost is £17. For more details contact Angela Bunney on 01208 841511.
REPORT FOR THE APCM HELD AT ST MABYN ON 2ND APRIL
The last year at St Mabyn has been particularly busy with the roof being repaired. Vast amounts of money have been raised, so a big thank you to everyone involved in this venture. Thank you Abigail for chairing the fund raising appeal committee and to Jenny our stalwart secretary. Thank you Jo and Alan for all the work you have done in the procuring of the tremendous grant from English Heritage. Thank you “Friends” for all your help and support. We retain our faithful nucleus of worshippers at our church services and welcome visitors during the holiday season. We have had a few more children on “special occasions” such as our Christmas services, and also on the Roof Dedication Sunday on 16th November. The Cubs and Scouts also held their St George’s day parade in the church. The Buzz Club continues to flourish. It has been such a pleasure to continue to welcome the Young Farmers at Christmas and Harvest. I continue to be very involved in St Mabyn School, and serve on the Governing Body. The children participate in a special service each term in church to which parents are invited. I also take a weekly assembly for the school on Wednesday mornings in church, before our midweek service.
The church has been used for cream teas and for charitable events that are extremely wide and varied. The Fete was a great success as always, in spite of the terrible weather and provided some of the much-needed financial support necessary for the upkeep of the church. The Flower Festival was also a pleasant occasion. Sadly the terrible rain led to flooding in the church and Meg William’s wedding venue had to be transferred to St Tudy. Crying the Neck was also cancelled. Molly’s excellent report has meant that I can cut short my report. However, obviously I would like to express my thanks to you all for the support and encouragement that you give to me personally and to the church. Special thanks obviously are due to Prebendary Urwin, to John Brendan Cook and Peter Coster, to John Lobb and Colin Hyde the Churchwardens, to Jo Hyde the Treasurer, to Mollie Dyke the Secretary. Also thanks are due to Marjorie Hambley our organist, to Anthea Lobb for all the work she does so quietly behind the scenes, to Carol Grigg and to all members of the PCC and Sidespersons. Thanks also to all who “do” the flowers, clean the brasses, clean the church etc. If I have inadvertently missed out anyone, thank you.
Sadly, we have lost “Bomber” Hoskins early in 2009. The church was full to capacity for his funeral. On a happier note, we had several weddings and baptisms during the year. Some members of the congregation sang in the Cathedral broadcast of Songs of Praise.
What of the future? As long as God is at the heart of what we do, in his service, then we shall not go far wrong. May God Bless You All. MARGARET
MICHAELSTOW
Michaelstow Parochial Church Council have need of a kind Volunteer who would take over the post of Treasurer. We have a small but loyal congregation and a larger loyal community who help us to success in the Fete, Harvest Festival and others. You do not need to be a regular attender nor live in the Parish of Michaelstowe itself. Volunteers from St. Mabyn or St. Tudy gratefully considered. I do hope someone will feel able to join our little band and help us keep Michaelstowe running. If you are willing please call either: David Ford on 01208 851854 or Kate Martin on 01208 851418. Thank you.

St Tudy Preschool
Once again we have so many people to say thank you to! The Mothers Day coffee morning was a great hit. Our thanks to Jo for baking fantastic cakes, and everyone who supported us. We raised a total of £114 (including donations from some very kind people). The Preschool had an Ofsted inspection in March, always a daunting prospect but part of our remit as a registered Preschool. We passed with a 'satisfactory' verdict. Thanks to all our staff, who were on duty that day, and for staying in the setting even when they get a phone call asking them to pick up their child from school (Kelly!!!).
On 30th May, we are holding a Fashion Show in the village hall. "Off The Peg" sells end of line ladies clothes/accessories from well-known shops and brands, at much reduced prices. All the clothes will be modelled by our very own models! Clothes can be bought at the end of the show. Tickets for entry are £3.50 and include a glass of wine. Proceeds from the ticket sales and a percentage of clothes sales will go to the Preschool. This event should be a lot of fun, as well as a great opportunity to pick up bargains. For tickets please contact Liz on 01208 850278. Get your friends and family to come too!
And finally, some breaking news. The Pre-school is in the very early stages of bidding for funding to build a new purpose-built pre-school. As a consequence, we want to expand our base of Trustees, and would like to invite members of the public to apply, especially those with skills in business planning, health & safety, finance, fundraising. Everybody is welcome to apply before our next AGM in the summer. Please contact Liz Hustwayte on 01208 850278 for an informal chat.
St Tudy Playing Field News
Hopefully, youngsters in the village will have spotted that the new seesaw in the Playing Field is now installed. This was paid for in large measure by a grant from the Biffaward scheme, under a procedure whereby waste disposal companies can offset their Landfill Tax dues by funding improvements to the environment, and our thanks go to Biffa for their support.
The Trustees have been looking for ways to utilise the area currently left vacant in the play pit. The Binding Stone Committee has already pledged a significant sum towards this project. Then, on Good Friday, I learned that the Leonard Laity Stoate Charitable Trust, a Southwest-based Methodist foundation has very kindly agreed to provide the balance of funds needed to purchase a new piece of play equipment, namely a ZigZag Twister, suitable for age range 6 to 16 years. It is hoped that this equipment can be put in place in time for the school summer holidays, provided that our community can arrange for the installation work to be completed on a DIY basis. So, if anybody with building skills who can volunteer to excavate a small foundation and mix and pour some concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions would like to contact me, this would be very welcome. St Tudy Garden Produce Association
The Spring Show on Saturday 28th March was one of the very best in recent years – a combination of being held a couple of weeks earlier than usual and the late spring resulted in a greater number of entries in most classes. The judges, Mr D Jasper (flowers), Mrs A Roose (floral art), Mrs Sloman (cookery) and Mrs F Hayes (handicraft), were very complimentary about the high standard and visitors throughout the afternoon all remarked how lovely the hall looked.
The Anne Luck Memorial Cup for Best Daffodil/Narcissi exhibit was awarded to Mr B Lamerton. Mrs Jane Miller won the Cup for most points in Flower classes as well as the Wildey Cup for most points in Home Produce with Mrs Lyn Button gaining the Runner-up Cup. Mrs Angela Hocking won the Cup for Best Exhibit in Floral Art with a charming tiny arrangement in the miniature class whilst the Weekes Rose Bowl for most points in Floral Art classes went to Mrs Jane King. Miss Nora Sheer won the Cup for most points in Handicrafts, but the Cup for Best Exhibit in Handicrafts and the Cup for Best Exhibit in Show were awarded to Mrs Mary Low for a wonderful piece of embroidery depicting the Camel Trail.
There were more entries this time in junior classes. Marley Lamerton Madden won with her arrangement in the Vase of Flowers class. For 6 Iced Buns 1st prize went to Ruth Button, 2nd to Ben Wootton and 3rd Joseph Hocking. A Decorated Egg was won by Jack Button, 2nd Joseph Hocking, 3rd Marley Lamerton Madden and highly commended Loveday Davies. A Decorated Bookmark was won by Jack Button, 2nd Marley Lamerton madden, 3rd Daniel Hocking, highly commended Ruth Button. The Best Painting was won by Jack Button, 2nd Marley Lamerton Madden, 3rd Ellie Wootton, and highly commended Loveday Davies and Tommy Hunter. Very well done, everyone! When the village web site is re-vamped there will be some photos of the show and winners.
The May Bank Holiday Outing on Monday 4th May to Trelawney at Ashford and Marwood Hill Gardens will cost £14 per person, names and money to Brian Lamerton. And finally (for now!) there will be a plant sale at the chestnut tree and coffee morning in the Clink on Saturday 9th May. Please come along and support us! Jane King
