YOU JUST NEVER KNOW IN THIS LIFE!
Having visited Cornwall on a regular basis for great holiday experiences I could firstly, never have imagined we would live in Wadebridge and secondly, never expected to be sharing in new friendships in your lovely St Tudy. Local people have been very welcoming and I already feel very much at home and look forward to time of shared encouragement and blessing.
From now until the summer of 2010, I am serving as the Methodist Minister in your village and as such will always be available to help you or your family in any way that I can. It is good also to be in partnership with Rev. Margaret through joint opportunities for worship, visits to your local school and a variety of other possible links, which may present themselves as the year unfolds.
With the autumn months comes the opportunity to give thanks for the wonderful provision of all our needs. Through the abundant Harvest we normally have in this land, we can add to this the Christian promise of under-girding love, guidance and a future assurance that all our futures are in safe hands. Look forward to meeting you all. REV RAY AVENT, METHODIST MINISTER, ST TUDY. Tel. 01208 816821 or e-mail “aventray@hotmail.com
ST TUDY PARISH COUNCIL
The Council met in the Hall on Wednesday 30th September. There were apologies from three councillors and from the Cornwall Council councillor. Two members of the village attended for the whole meeting. The Parish Council accounts had been audited satisfactorily. By law, these accounts can be seen by any member of the public if required. The Council takes great care in spending any of your money. All spend must be approved by the Council and by cheque only. Every cheque is signed by two councillors. Accounts are scrutinised by the Council, then by an independent auditor before submission to the public auditor. Our policy is to minimise Parish expenditure, which is kept down to under 2% of your council tax.
The future of the Village School gave rise to considerable debate. Whatever the merits of a possible new school at Longstone might be, the very fast Bodmin to Camelford road and the dangerous crossroads were of great concern. Most of the school children to attend would be unable to walk to school, requiring school transport to be provided. An even greater concern was the fact that a village school, in a village, was considered to be an essential part of the village community. Moving to a school out of St Tudy would be damaging to the community spirit. What could be done to keep the present village school?
A gymnasium and canteen for the school to be built in the area of the present tattered old canteen could be one way of overcoming some of the problems of the school. Anything to keep the current well-loved school would be supported by the Parish Council who would write to the board of school governors.
The next meeting of the Council will be in St Tudy Village Hall at 7pm on Wednesday 30th October. You are invited to come to the meeting, to raise matters of parish concern at the public session at the start of the meeting or just to hear, and often laugh, about Council business. ST TUDY HARVEST FESTIVAL
Many thanks for the enormous support given to the Harvest Lunch. A special thank you to all those who helped on the day and to those who prepared delicious food especially the wonderful desserts.
It seemed to be a very happy occasion, joining together with our Methodist friends. The object of the luncheon was to raise some money for St Tudy Church and this we did with a grand total of £400. Also the sale of produce made £53, which has been donated to the local hospice. Well done everyone! PAT TANNER AND HAZEL GIBBONS
ST MABYN PARISH COUNCIL

ST TUDY G P A AUTUMN SHOW
Our Autumn Show was held on a lovely sunny day, which brought out plenty of visitors for the afternoon viewing. Entries for vegetables and flowers were well up this year and the judges – Mr M Blake and Mr Jim Godden – were impressed with the standard. Mr C Menear from St. Minver had most points in the vegetable section – runner-up Mr I Colston from Helland – and also won the cups for the best vegetable exhibit and the best collection of vegetables. Mrs Ivy Bastard again took the cup for most points in the flower section, runner-up being Mrs Jenny Keat. The best flower exhibit – three beautiful dahlias – went to Mr Menear. Mrs Hilary Cragg, our floral art judge, had a most difficult job distinguishing between the excellent flower arrangements in all classes, but both cups – for most points and for best exhibit finally went to Mrs Angela Hocking. Miss Sheer judged the rather disappointingly sparse junior section. Joseph Hocking won the animal made from vegetable matter, his brother Daniel came second and Marley Lamerton Madden third. But Marley had a first for the autumn basket arrangement and an allotment garden made in a seed tray. Our thanks to all the judges. We now have a rest from shows until the Spring Show in late March. THE FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH
Our very first Wine and Wisdom Quiz Night on 7th October in St Mabyn Village Hall was very well supported and great fun. Quiz master, Malcolm Jones, kept up a great pace and taxed the brains of our contestant to their limits, particularly with his projected images, some of which looked a bit rude but weren’t! Members of the Friends’ committee donated and prepared an excellent buffet, which was very well received and was included in the admission charge of only £4. Our profit for the evening was more than £200 and we should like to express our appreciation for the support of all those from St Mabyn, St Tudy, St Kew and surrounding areas who attended. All funds raised by The Friends’ are directed solely for the maintenance and beautification of St Mabyn Church and it is very satisfying to be able to raise funds with such enjoyable activities and events.
Our next event will be another of our extremely popular meals with talk, which will take place on Friday 27th November in St Mabyn Village Hall, 12noon for 12.30. Tickets are £12 with concessions for members of ‘Friends.’ Our speaker will be Richard Jenkin of St Mabyn, who has very kindly agreed to talk on his recent spell as science teacher at the Henry Nginza School in the township of Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth, where the children often come to school hungry but are keen to learn. The area has great poverty – 50% unemployment plus AIDS/TB/alcoholism etc. The school has very few resources but the teachers are dedicated. Although they lack material wealth in the township they are happy because they care for each other and have a strong faith. Richard’s talk will also include projected photographs. To reserve a place for this event please ring Liz or Gage on 01208 841378, or Audrey on 01208 841607. Early booking is recommended.
For our meal and talk on January 22nd the speaker will be Lady Mary Holborrow, who will talk on the History of the Lord Lieutenancy. Giles Clotworthy of the National Trust has also agreed to speak at one of our meals. Details of these events will be in the December issue of The Magazine. AUDREY COOKE

This new interest group continues to meet to monitor the recently proposed development of the Dries at Wenford, parts of which are Listed. So far no application, by the developer, has been submitted for planning approval, nor has English Heritage received any communication concerning it, hence St Breward Parish Council has not yet discussed it.
Members of Wenford Camel Vision hope, however, that should the developer wish to go ahead then it will be possible for his aims also to meet the desires of the local residents. The site is at the junction of the Parishes of St Breward, Blisland and St Tudy, and anyone interested in joining should contact the Secretary, Catherine Masters on cmasters@keybridgefarm.co.uk

ARTICLE FROM PARISH MAGAZINE OF ST GEORGE’S CHURCH, NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME (kindly submitted by Hilda Halls)
The Celtic year was divided into two seasons: the light and the dark, celebrating the light at Beltane on 1st May and the dark at Samhain (Gaelic for summer’s end) on 1st November. Samhain begins at dusk on 31st October. Villagers gathered the best of the autumn harvest and slaughtered cattle for the feast and the focus of each village’s festivities was a great bonfire. Villagers cast the bones of the slaughtered cattle upon the flames. (Our word bonfire comes from these “bone fires”.) With the great bonfire roaring, the villagers extinguished all other fires. Each family then solemnly lit their hearth from the one great common flame, bonding all families of the village together.
Many rituals of this time involved providing hospitality for dead ancestors: Celts put out food and drink for the dead with great ceremony. Swarms of spirits poured into our world on November Eve, but not all of these spirits were friendly. Celts carved the images of spirit guardians onto turnips and set “jack o’lanterns” before their doors to keep out unwelcome visitors from the Otherworld. There was also a light hearted side to the Celtic New Year rituals. Boys and girls would put on each other’s clothes and would generally flout convention by boisterous behaviour and by playing tricks on their elders and betters.
With the rise of Christianity, Samhain was changed to Hallowmas or All Saints Day, to commemorate the souls of the blessed dead who had been canonised that year. The night before became popularly known as Halloween, or All Hallow’s Eve. Many ancient Celtic customs proved compatible with the new Christian religion. Thus Christianity embraced the Celtic notions of family, community, the bond among all people and respect for the dead.
So we shouldn’t worry about all the fuss and commotion made about Halloween (such as “Trick or Treating”). We may not like all the focus on witches and broomsticks but the thankfulness for our ancestors is what it should be about, coupled with the promise of our future with God.
ST TUDY VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE BONFIRE NIGHT

APPLES NEEDED
We are a group of young men from St Mabyn who have formed a cider society. Every year we relieve local people of unwanted apples and turn them into cider; this includes windfalls.
This year we intend to expand our enterprise and need more apples to produce cider ready for Christmas. If you have any spare apples, or know someone who might have some in exchange for cider please call Tom or 07919 182196 to arrange collection.
BEDLAM YOUTH THEATRE
‘Because it’s fun!’ This is what you keep hearing when you ask young people why they go to Bedlam Youth Theatre.
The workshops, run by actors Emma Spurgin Hussey and Rory Wilton from Bedlam Theatre Company of Cornwall, combine disciplined learning with enjoyment. Group members gain confidence through theatre games and exercises, text and improvisation.
Participants are trained to become good actors and informed audiences – and learn useful life skills. Creating theatre draws upon skills and qualities that are invaluable in life, including confidence, team work, sensitivity, courage, articulacy and open-mindedness. Many ex-students go on to act professionally; still more say the training has helped them perform better in their chosen work.
Bedlam Youth Theatre is about the group, but also about each individual. Everyone has a role specially written for them by a professional playwright in the end-of-year play, based on individuals’ wishes and needs, so everyone has the chance to develop at their own rate in their own way, to the best of their ability. They also have the chance to have an enormous amount of fun! Youth theatre meets on Mondays at Bodmin College from 5-7 (age 7-12).

TREVEIGHAN METHODIST CHURCH HARVEST FESTIVAL
The Chapel, which was beautifully decorated with flowers, fruit and vegetables, was crowded to capacity for the service conducted by Mr D Pett on Sunday 20th September and again on the Monday evening, when after a short act of worship, the sale of produce was held. After fierce bidding for the fruit, vegetables, flowers and bars of chocolate, the grand total for the weekend was £519. The Chapel members would like to thank all those who donated produce, those who helped with decoration, and of course, all those who came and worshipped on the Sunday and were so generous on the Monday evening.
The next event at the Chapel is a Christmas Fair and Coffee Morning on 18th November at 10.30am, with cake stall, raffle, cards etc. Everyone is very welcome.
On 29th November at 6pm “The Millpool Chorale” will perform as part of our Sunday worship. Again everyone is very welcome. MARY WATKINSON tel. 01208 850269
* * * * * * * * *BIRD BOXES IN THE CHURCHYARD
St Tudy School has been making a survey of plants in the churchyard and now they would like to put up nest boxes to attract birds. These cost £10 each (made by Mr Ian Borton of Nanstallon who gives the cost to the Cornish Hospices). Please come to our Coffee Morning on 7th November, from 10–11.30am in the Clink so that we can buy several boxes. There will be the usual Bring and Buy and Raffle; also a Bric a Brac stall (weather permitting). JENNY MUIR
* * * * * * * * *ST TUDY WEB SITE
We are trying to construct a village calendar on the web site to include all events happening in St Tudy over the next eighteen months. If you are holding an event in the village please let Bob and Jane King know either by email webmaster@sttudy.org.uk telephone or at their home address.
It is hope that by having a calendar we will avoid a clash and therefore each event will be fully supported. Also a lot of holiday makers look at the site before travelling to Cornwall and if an event is advertised they may decide to come along.
If you’ve produced a poster for an event, then let Bob have it as this can go on the site too.
MICHAELSTOW PARISH COUNCIL
The October meeting was held in Treveighan Chapel. Chris Sims, the Community Network Manager for the area attended to give the Council an overview of the Community Network and its aim to promote localism to provide a link between Truro and the local area. They are currently looking at, amongst other things, the possibility that some services may be provided better at a more local level, rather than centrally. The Council thanked Chris for his time and look forward to working with him in the future.
Notice is hereby given from Cornwall Council that there is to be a temporary road closure from the Michaelstow turning on the B3266 to the junction turning to Michaelstow Churchtown, for patching work. The closure will commence on 16th November and it is expected that the work will be completed within two weeks. The closure will be in place 24 hours per day, weekdays only.
The next meeting is Thursday 5th November at 7.30pm in Treveighan Chapel.
As a footnote as I am new to being Parish Clerk and still very much learning the ropes, please do not hesitate to contact me on any issues concerning you, and I will do my best to help! Tel. 01840 212178 or pamswettenham@tiscali.co.uk PAM SWETTENHAM

ST TUDY W I
At our October meeting, Jon Cleave gave a very entertaining talk on the conception and subsequent production of his Gully books and CDs. He is also a member of the Fishermen’s Friends singing group of Port Isaac, who are to make a recording of their sea shanties and also missed, by one question, fame (and £11,000) on the TV programme “Eggheads”.
On Friday 20th November, Emily Jane and Elaine of Bruallen will be demonstrating ideas of food and floral decorations for Christmas. We welcome anyone who would like to join us at this meeting – two young, enterprising ladies to get us into the Christmas spirit.
Maggie Lobb told us of her day at the Autumn council meeting, at the Hall for Cornwall, where Pete Goss was the main speaker and where she collected the framed certificate for coming 4th in the “Best Kept Village” competition.
Lilian is now collecting £8.50 from those who are going on the coach to see Aled Jones at the Theatre Royal on Thursday 12th November and also taking names for the Plymouth shopping trip on Thursday 26th November. J JASPER

FROM REVEREND MARGARET
October has been a very busy yet glorious month weather wise, making up for the poor summer that we have had. Already the leaves are changing colour and falling from the trees, reminding us that winter is just around the corner. We have reflected on the faithfulness and goodness of God in our harvest services and we now look towards a month of further reflection in November when we remember All Saints and All Souls. We shall be holding our All Souls Service on 2nd November at 7pm at St Tudy. Sheets for the names of loved ones you wish to be remembered will be at the back of the churches and everyone is welcome at the service.
The services for Remembrance Sunday (8th November) will be 10.00am at St Mabyn, 10.30am at Michaelstow and 10.50am at St Tudy. The speaker at St Tudy will be Colonel Kevin Lawton of St Tudy. On Remembrance Day itself (11th November), I shall be holding a short service at St Mabyn at 10.45am. I will be reading out the names from all three churches and we will be observing the two minutes silence at 11am.
15th November is St Mabyn Patronal Festival, so we look forward to a joyful service of worship and fellowship. This will be followed by lunch at Levalsa Mere.
Please note that the last Sunday in November is Advent Sunday and the fifth Sunday, which is always joint. The main service will be an Advent Carol Service with readings and carols. I will be doing an extra 8am BCP Holy Communion at St Tudy so that no one needs to miss out on their Communion.
On 18th October, Sue Green, the Diocesan Director of Education visited and spoke at St Mabyn and St Tudy. She gave thought provoking talks and spent some time after the service speaking with people. It was good to have her with us.
October has been a sad month in some respects. Sadly Nancy Williams has died and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family. Helen Skyner has also moved to Downend near Bristol to be closer to her family. They will both be sadly missed. Every blessing. REV MARGARET
CLINKER’S COFFEE AND ARTS MORNING

Everyone welcome to have a go at drawing and painting. And after some more refreshments you may like to purchase some raffle tickets, Christmas and greeting cards and gifts from the Clinker’s Crafts Table. Hope to see you in the Clink on Saturday 28th November from 10am to 12noon. Proceeds of morning to go towards improving the lighting upstairs in the Clink. BEV SMITH (851882)

THANKS
I am sad to have said “Goodbye” to St Tudy after 15 years or so and I am sorry there wasn’t time to say goodbye to all the friends I’ve made in that time. By way of this short note, I would like to thank you all most sincerely for the love, friendship and kindness given to myself, and Ron since we moved to St Tudy all those years ago. You will all be in my thoughts, along with some very special memories of a wonderful village. I plan to return next summer for a holiday with family, and will look forward to seeing you all then. With my love to you all – Helen Skyner, 10 Peache Court, Peache Road, Downend, South Gloucestershire, BS16 5TP (tel. 0117 9109 899).
I would like to thank all the family and friends who sent good wishes, cards and prayers, also those who visited me in Treliske. We are very grateful to everybody who offered their help to Mavis during the last few months. We are so lucky to be living in such a kind and caring community as St Tudy. DEREK HANDOVER
It is hard to believe that it was six months ago that I was diagnosed with cancer and now I am well on the way to recovery. This was made that much easier with all the get well cards, gifts and concerned inquiries from the people of St Tudy, Michaelstow and St Mabyn that flooded in. The offers of help were all very much appreciated. Thank you all, it is very humbling to live in such a wonderful community. JOHN EDWARD-COLLINS
Michaelstow Church would like to say a big thank you to all who supported us on our Harvest Festival and made the Church feel so alive and vibrant. The auction was a great success and raised £200 for the Cornwall Hospice Care. Thank you again. It was lovely to see so many people there. KATE MARTIN CHURCHWARDEN

ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL
Just to let you know that the Pre-school Bid application for the new build and Business Plan was safely delivered to Family Services on 30th September. The Trustees are extremely relieved to have completed this task, which involved seven months of hard work. We have to wait until mid-November for the decision.
Recent fundraising events included a coffee morning and the Race Night, which was joint with the School. Thanks to all who helped make these events successful.
On Tuesday 17th November an “Off the Peg” Clothes Show will be held at Wadebridge School hall. Another chance to see and buy some super clothes. The evening will open at 7pm with the show starting at 7.30pm. Contact Liz Hustwayte 01208 850278 for tickets. It is important that we continue to raise funds for the Pre-school (to replace and replenish equipment and materials) and there will be more events in the coming months (watch this space, the web site www.st-tudy-preschool.org.uk and posters for information).
The children have had great fun on some recent outings with a trip to Daymer Bay on a glorious Thursday and a train ride from Bodmin to Plymouth on a beautiful fine October day – the children were very excited. The staff, parents and children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and a few of the fellow passengers thought the staff and parents “very brave”! The day was fantastic despite a delayed return journey.
For those residents new to the area, St Tudy Pre-school caters for children of 2-5 years and offers four morning sessions a week, 9.00 to 1pm, including lunch club. If you have a child who would like to attend Pre-school, please contact Liz Hustwayte, Chair, on 01208 850278. Alternatively, just pop into one of the Pre-school sessions held in the Village Hall (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings) where will the staff will be happy to help. Our Baby & Toddler Group held in the Village Hall on Tuesday mornings 9.15-11.15am offers parents with very young children the opportunity to get together. If you are interested in attending the group, visit www.st-tudy-preschool.org.uk or phone Jo Couch on 01208 72329. BEV SMITH (TRUSTEE) on behalf of LIZ HUSTWAYTE, CHAIR ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL
