MICHAELMAS & HARVEST FESTIVAL AT MICHAELSTOW 27th SEPTEMBER
It all went so well last year that we have decided to use the same format in 2009, that is a service at 11 o’clock to mark the Feast of St Michael followed by a harvest lunch in church from about 12.15; then after lunch will be the auction of donated produce.
If you do not wish to attend the service we would be delighted to welcome you to the lunch afterwards and hope you would stay for the auction. There will be no set charge for lunch but a ‘begging bowl’ will be provided for donations. This year all proceeds will be donated to the Cornish Hospices, a most worthy cause, which calls for all the support we can give, so please be generous. Donations of produce to be auctioned can be left in the church from the previous day.
We were delighted by the response last year, as not only was it a good fundraiser but also a pleasant social occasion, which brought our scattered little parish together. Please do your best to come. We’d love to see you there. David Ford
The Country Market
Calling all makers and bakers, growers and sewers and producers in general! In these credit crunch times turn your hobbies and pastimes into a source of extra income. The Country Market, held in Wadebridge Town Hall every Thursday morning is looking for more suppliers, particularly flowers and plants, craft and art items, and home produce which can include baking, pickles and chutneys and jams. The commission taken is very low and the various regulations simple and easy to follow. Ring 850796 if you are interested.
* * * * * * * * *St Tudy Garden Produce Association Summer Show
A couple of days before the show on Saturday 8th August it was actually fine! The previous weeks had been so wet, but things managed to dry out in time for a wonderful display of flowers and veg. The judges were Mr Kendrick (veg), Mr Crewes (flowers) and Mrs Bluett (floral art). The prizes were presented by club Chairman, Mr Brian Lamerton.
The Cup for most points in Vegetable Section was awarded to Mr I Colston, with Mr M Armstrong taking the Runner-up Cup. Mrs I Bastard won the John Stone Cup for most points in Pot Plants Section gained by a St Tudy GPA member, the Lamerton Memorial Cup for the Best Exhibit in show with her pot of fuchsias, and the Cup for most points in Cut Flower Section. Mrs J Keat was awarded the Runner-up Cup. Mr Colston won the Dray Memorial Cup for most points in Vegetable and Flower Sections as well as a new Cup, The Ron Skyner Memorial Cup for Best Fuchsia Blooms. Mrs J Jasper took both Cups for Most Points in Floral Art and the Best Exhibit in Floral Art with an innovative design on the figure “8”, the Show being held on the 8th day of the 8th month!
The winners of the other new cup, for Best Allotment, were not in the hall that afternoon; perhaps they were busy on their plot! So it will be presented when the “Allotmenters” hold their party later in the month.
Marley Lamerton Madden had no competition in the Juniors so she took all the awards for her seaside garden and arrangement of flowers and foliage.
Many congratulations to everyone who entered – most people picked up a place card somewhere along the line, which is always encouraging. A steady crowd came through the doors all afternoon, Ken and Val Metcalfe sold raffle tickets and Val Smith and Peggy Metters provided tea and coffee. The photos should appear on the village web site very soon. Jane King
Hanging Baskets and Planted Troughs Competition
Bev and Mike Smith had a good time going round St Tudy judging the baskets and troughs. The results were announced at the Garden Club’s Summer Show.
Baskets – 1st Maureen Bloomfield, 2nd
Sue Dibble, 3rd Ruth Poynton Troughs - 1st Jane King, Joint 2nd Dee Eastlake and Doug Degnin
There are many in the village, who don’t want to take part in the competition, even though they do have lovely baskets etc. Perhaps next year everyone will enter. Bev and Mike took several photos, which will appear shortly on the village web site. * * * * * * * * *
Michaelstow Church Fete
The annual Church Fete was held at The Old Rectory by kind permission of Monty and Angela Whitebloom, who opened the occasion. The fete made £1494 for the church funds owing to the generosity of those who provided for the stalls and those who attended in rather uncertain weather. The highlight of the day was the Punch and Judy Show by Professor Goodvibes, which entertained adults and children alike. Music by the Camelford Town Band enhanced the traditional nature of the day. The committee is most grateful to all contributors, both visitors and helpers and particularly to the Whitebloom family for continuing to provide the delightful setting in their garden. ST TUDY VILLAGE HALL – SUMMER SUPPER
The summer supper was held on 1st August and was enjoyed by all who came to partake of the five course meal! Again a lot of hard work by those who prepared the courses – Sue, Beverley, Rosemary and Liz of the carnival committee; Liz, Susie, Joe and two helpers (?) of the playgroup (who stayed all evening and helped in every way!) and Lilian, Di and Val – and all who gave sweets to make our job easy! Joan for organising the cheese and biscuits for the Dance Club. Thank you Bill for running the raffle and the organisations who donated prizes; and of course, the men who helped prepare and clear the hall. A big thank you to you all – a profit of £406.50 was made for hall funds.

DEAR VILLAGE
I have been re-reading the cards and letters that I received in April; they are filled with such special heartfelt words of kindness and understanding. This kindness has continued through the months. Friends have kept me busy and on any visit to the village there is always a friendly face to ask how I am. This is truly an exceptional village to have the privilege to live in. Thank you all. VANESSA GEORGE
* * * * * * * * * SPECIAL MEETING OF ST TUDY PCC
There will be a Special Meeting of the Parochial Church Council on Tuesday 8th September at 7.30pm in the Clink. The meeting will be primarily concerned to deal with the current financial demands that the Parish is facing and which are becoming increasingly difficult to meet. Currently our income falls short of the amount needed to cover the annual running costs.
There will also be a discussion on a programme of events for next year; the proceeds of which may help to satisfy our financial commitments. It is hoped members of the Church Council will give some thought in advance of the meeting as to what can be promoted to help us through what seems likely to be a difficult time ahead.
HYMN TUNE CONCERT: ORGAN MUSIC IN ST TUDY CHURCH
How well do you know your hymn tunes? Geoffrey Gibbons will give a Concert of Organ Music in St Tudy Church on 17th September at 7.00pm. (Please note the time!) Most of the pieces will be based on well-known hymn tunes from the whole corpus of organ music from the time of JS Bach to the 21st century. Such compositions have become an integral part of most organists’ repertoire and are popular with audiences through their familiarity in church services. Perhaps your favourite hymn tune will be among the items, and it may be interesting to see who can identify the most tunes! There will be no charge but a retiring collection at the conclusion of the Concert.

ST MABYN PARISH COUNCIL
Extracts from agreed Minutes of the Meeting of St Mabyn Parish Council July 2009
Planning Applications / Planning Matters - The Clerk reported that Midas Homes had registered two detailed planning applications for 35 houses on land between Chapel Lane and Chestnut Drive, St Mabyn. Councillors agreed to hold an Extraordinary Meeting in July to consider these applications. Planning Decision received from Cornwall Council - AD & SW Kellow, Treveglos Farm – Construction of cattle shed – Approved. Playing Field / Provision of new play equipment - The Chairman briefed the Council on the ROSPA inspection report, and the work highlighted by himself and Cllr A Titcomb to be carried out. A quotation of £424.80 had been obtained and the Council authorised the work to be completed. Allotments: The Clerk read a letter from Mr Mutton, tenant of the Glebe Field. Taking into consideration various aspects of this land, the Council resolved not to pursue this site for the provision of allotments. An alternative site within the village was identified and the tenant will be contacted. Cllr C Hodges reported on a possible site at Glenmorris, a field of approximately 3.5 acres, with road access. Although the Parish Council had an obligation to investigate the requests for allotments, some of the original writers had now obtained allotments in other areas, and some had withdrawn, leaving only four requests for this project, although others may come forward.
Date of next Meeting: Tuesday, 1st Sept 2009. See Agenda last week in Aug. Cllr Helen Barrett
FROM REVEREND MARGARET
August is slipping by quietly. It is so good to be back doing Sunday services again. The Songs of Praise was a great success. Now as September approaches and children return to school, life becomes normal again and I do hope church attendance will pick up again.
All of our churches are desperately trying to make ends meet financially, so we would be grateful for any ideas of social and fundraising events that we could hold.
At this time John Lobb and John Chugg are making steady progress after surgery. Please continue to remember them and all who are sick in your prayers. If you know anyone who is sick or would like a visit, please let me know. Every Blessing. REVEREND MARGARET * * * * * * * * *

ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL
Well another summer has flown by and we are into a new Pre-School year. We welcome back our older children and say hello to some new faces!
Our topic in Pre-school this term is ‘All about me’. The children will be exploring their surroundings as well as getting to know more about how we all live, as well as exploring some different cultures.
We have had a very busy summer, with several coffee mornings and our Family Fun day – thank you to all those who have supported us at our various events.
In addition to our fundraising a lot of hard work has gone into our Business Plan, in preparation for a new pre-school building. This is nearing completion now and will be ready for submission by the 30th September so fingers crossed and watch this space…..
We are holding a Race Night on Saturday 12th September, in the village hall. This is a joint fundraiser with the School. The event will be run as previous Race Nights held in the village. We will be running a tote and there will be several races. There will also be a raffle and a bar with light refreshments. So come and join us for a fun night out and hopefully come away with a few winnings!!
Any further information on any of the above can be gained from Liz Hustwayte: 01208 850278. LIZ HUSTWAYTE, CHAIR ST TUDY PRE-SCHOOL

LARGE PRINT COPIES OF THE MAGAZINE
If anyone has problems reading the print in the Magazine, we are able to print the Magazine in a larger font; we would need to use A3 paper instead of A4, so there would be an additional minimal cost.
If you are interested, please contact the Editor on 850990.
Allen Valley Singers
We are looking forward to singing at a wedding at Pencarrow, both for the ceremony and the reception afterwards and our of course our own annual concert, which promises to be a humdinger! The details of both will be advertised nearer the time, so keep your eyes open.
We have our second CD in the pipeline and discussions are being held as to the very real possibility of a new uniform. We look forward to exciting times. With or without the sun, we hope you have all had a relaxed summer. Arrangements for our second recruitment evening in early autumn are being discussed and information will be available nearer to the time. It has been a pleasure to welcome the new members after the success of the first recruitment evening in April. HELP!
Michaelstow church is in need of a friendly organist who could play one of the two instruments we have at least twice a month at the 9.30am Sunday service and possibly an occasional evensong, currently under discussion. Our tiny regular congregation work hard to keep this beautiful Church open and would welcome new members. We have a supportive community and hold a very successful fete in July. We also hold a very successful Harvest Lunch and Auction, which this year is being held on the 27th September on our Patronal Festival. Everyone is welcome and donations from the lunch and auction will be going to Cornwall Hospice Care.
I know that in our modern world there is little room for the church but it still is a valuable part of a community, often the hub of a village and a meeting place. A friend once told me that sometimes it takes a broken heart to bring us back to God and I know myself that the church in all its many different forms has helped me deal with a less than easy life. And I believe it is important not to allow our beautiful churches, which our ancestors endowed with so much love and which contain a lot of our history as well as sanctuary from our increasingly hectic world, to become a redundant and unloved building. Katharine Martin Churchwarden TEL. 851418
FRIENDS OF ST MABYN CHURCH
Although FOSMC fundraisers have been adversely affected by bad weather recently, we still have the Wine and Wisdom evening to look forward to on Wednesday 7th October in St Mabyn Village Hall. Details are presently being finalised and will be detailed in the October edition of The Magazine. In the meantime, anyone who would like to book a team or who would like further information as soon as it is available, please phone 01208 841378 or 01208 841607. We also have three of our very popular meals with speaker events in the pipeline; the first of which is expected to take place during November.
Sadly, a few of our members have either moved on or have passed away during the past few months and, whilst our membership remains at more than 100, we are always pleased to welcome new 'Friends.' Although a number of members choose to donate more, membership remains at very modest annual donation of £10 per person. For information re membership please phone Carole Grigg on 01208 841276.
‘The Friends,’ who are not necessarily Churchgoers, was established to assist with the restoration, preservation, repair, maintenance, improvement and beautification of the Parish Church of St Mabyn and of the monuments, fittings and fixtures in the Church and the two Churchyards. Thus, Friends’ funds are channelled exclusively into local and visible areas of need. Sadly, more than 30 rural Churches are being closed annually as a result of lack of local support and the enormous cost of maintaining these magnificent buildings.
A glimpse at the Visitors Book in St Mabyn Church is quite heart warming as the comments made by those passing through express a great deal of appreciation of all the efforts that are made to keep the Church a peaceful, attractive and cared for environment. Mike Haywood’s three paintings depicting the Pilgrim Fathers are still in situ and the ‘Friends’ table has a selection of notelets and postcards for sale as well as membership forms and information. The beautifully inscribed Book of Remembrance is always open at the appropriate page and, among many other interesting items; there are numerous photographs on display covering the recent Restoration Appeal. A recent showing of the Doc Martin series on ITV also gave us another opportunity to view the scenes that were filmed in St Mabyn Church.
St Mabyn Church is special and whether folk attend a service, pop in for a look around, a cream tea, a concert or to shelter from the rain, they are always most welcome. Audrey Cooke |
