HANGING BASKETS AND PLANTED TROUGHS COMPETITION

Colin and Judith Jasper kindly agreed to judge this year's exhibits, which they did most diligently!  It was difficult choosing the winner of the baskets between two very strong contenders.  They decided Jane Clue should be first as she had used wicker baskets which were completely covered by the plants, so Maureen Bloomfield gained second spot as her basket could still be seen!  Sue Dibble was awarded third place.  For the Tubs they again had difficulty in selecting the winner but Kathy Hillson came out on top with her wide variety of plants, all in excellent condition, whilst Jane Clue came second, again a very good standard but not such a big variety, and Jim Kempthorne was third.

Thank you, Colin and Judith, for your time and thank you everyone who took part, whether they actually entered or not!  Hopefully next year we may have more entries to make the village look lovely during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Year.                                                                                JANE KING

GOOD NEWS FOR ST MABYN

The Village Hall Committee has been successful in its application to the Lottery Fund ‘Awards for All’ for a grant to renovate, redecorate and refurbish the Snooker Hall end of the Peace Memorial Hall.  We aim to extend its current use to create a new community room which will provide a versatile and welcoming space for use by smaller groups, particularly when the large hall is in use during the day.

Work will be starting this week to slate-hang the gable end and renew the rainwater drainage to exclude the damp from the Snooker Room, before renovating inside.  We hope to be able to maximise the benefit of the grant through community involvement in some of the refurbishment and will be looking for volunteers.

If you would like to help improve the Village Hall contact Kitty on 841894, Helen on 841342 or any member of the Village Hall Committee, or look out for notices of volunteer days.

THANKS

Graham and Sally would like to thank everybody for their kind words and thoughts on the loss of our horse (Hope) in such a tragic way.

The family of Mary Low wish to thank everyone for their kindness, support and good wishes over the past few weeks. It was lovely that so many were able to join them in St Tudy Church for the service in Celebration of her long & happy life. We are truly fortunate to be able to live in St Tudy and we know Mary thought that some of her happiest times were spent here among so many of her friends.

COFFEE MORNING 6TH SEPTEMBER

Please note that Coffee will be served in the Clink in the first week of September on Tuesday 6th September at 10 am instead of Wednesday 7th.  This is to enable the Bishop who will be visiting St. Tudy that day, to call in to meet any villagers who would usually patronise the Coffee Mornings.

RECORDING OF THE ORGAN IN ST TUDY CHURCH

On 20th July a recording was made in the Church of organ music played by Luke Bond, Assistant Director of Music at Truro Cathedral.  The resultant CD will be on sale in October at the price of £10 each.  It is not likely that there will be any profit from the sales unless these exceed 200, but readers should be assured that there will be no call on Church funds to make up any shortfall in the costs of production of the CD.  A specimen will appear on the Church Notice Board in due course.  It is also hoped that the many people who live outside St. Tudy and who made donations to the Organ Rebuilding Fund in 2006, would wish to hear how the funds were spent and how splendid is the musical outcome.

MICHAELSTOW   FETE 2011

The annual Church Fete was held on 29th July at The Old Rectory by kind permission of Angela and Monty Whitebloom. Canon Judith Pollinger opened the Fete and made the important point that, with the congregation down to single figures, if the church is to continue being used for worship we need more people to attend Services. Good weather encouraged a record attendance and takings of £1600. The PCC are most grateful to everyone who helped to make it such a successful day and to all those who came to enjoy the event and contribute to the maintenance of our lovely church. The Punch and Judy Show, sponsored by the Scott-Hopkins family was, as always, a very popular attraction for enthusiastic children between the ages of three and seventy.

NEWS FROM ST MABYN SCHOOL

We are now looking forward to a new term, with new children, new experiences and new challenges!

Our last term finished on a high, with St Mabyn’s Got Talent – and by golly we have!! All the children had the opportunity to perform; we had a violinist, a cellist, lots of drums, a band, a comedian and lots of dancers and singers to mention but a few. One performer, Imogen had the audience spellbound with her incredible singing – there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The evening finished with a presentation to all the Y6 children of cups, cards and book tokens.

The following day saw our Final Assembly at which we again said “goodbye” to our Y6 children with cards drawn and written by the rest of the school. We then, as always, clapped them out of the playground for the last time.

Many thanks to the HSA who arranged a party for everyone straight after, with food and dancing and a disco organised by a parent, Mr Alford.

The new term starts on Tuesday 6th September. See you then.

VISIT OF BISHOP TIM THORNTON

Readers will now know that the Very Revd Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro will attend both services on 11th September at St Mabyn at 9.30 am and at St. Tudy at the usual time of 11.05.

Following the service at St Tudy there will be a lunch in the Village Hall to which all are invited.  It is essential however that anyone who wishes to attend must purchase a ticket at £8 by 6th September so that final numbers can be given to the caterers by the morning of 7th.  It is hoped that all members of the congregation will feel it important to be in the Church to meet the Bishop. Tickets will be obtainable from the Church Wardens.

On the 6th September the Bishop will be visiting both schools in St Tudy and St Mabyn. With over 200 parishes in his Diocese a visitation is a rare but welcome event that our congregation (and indeed the village as a whole) should not miss.

THE CLINKERS ART GROUP

The Village Art Group seeks new members.  The Clinkers meet on a Tuesday in the Clink from 2 to 4-30 pm.  The Group share ideas and ‘arty craft skills’ by working together.  The afternoons are a mix of social and serious work. We have visiting artists to run workshops several times a year and work towards exhibitions (the last was during the Garden Safari weekend).  Many of us paint and draw for enjoyment and relaxation; others are far more professional and paint with a view to selling their work.  Craft sessions, often inspired by a member’s interests and visits to galleries, are included in the programme.  All welcome:  do call in any Tuesday; you will receive a warm welcome and a cup of tea, or contact Caroline Harnett 01208 850087.

It’s a time of change for Moor Harmony North Cornwall; from 8th September we are moving to the Wadebridge Ambulance Hall (behind the cinema) and will now meet on Thursdays from 7.15 – 10.00pm.

We sing A Cappella, barbershop style and enjoy learning and performing a variety of music. Barbershop arrangements can be used for songs from any era and range from soft and gentle ballads to upbeat lively fun music.

We were very pleased to welcome some new members this summer. They have settled in well and are enjoying the sociable atmosphere and the chance to learn and sing 4-part harmony with us.

We are a friendly bunch who would love to see you. If you think that you would be interested in singing with us, please come along and try us out. For more details and to reserve your place, please phone 01840 212312 and ask for Mel.                               PAULINE GOBBITT SECRETARY        email moorharmony@live.co.uk

The choir is now having a break until the beginning of September, when we start on our autumn programme.  However, to round off the summer session splendidly, we sang at the wedding of Kathryn Tiplady and Philip Evens at St. Breward Church on Friday 29th July. ST TUDY PLAYING FIELD TRUST NEWS

A combination of wear and tear, and ever more demanding safety standards, means that the Trustees are looking at a major refurbishment programme for the Playing Field. This will cost several thousand pounds, a very substantial sum for a registered charity to find in these difficult economic times. Unfortunately, the swings have had to be taken out of service for the time being.

The Trust also has a vacancy for an additional Trustee. So if you have time to help with the management of our fund-raising efforts, or can contribute in other ways towards the running of the playing field, the Trustees would be delighted to hear from you. For an informal discussion in the first instance, please call me on 01208 851581.

FROM THE METHODIST MINISTER

Dear Friends, Over the past weeks there have been almost daily references in our newspapers and on the television news bulletins to the needs of the people in the ‘Horn of Africa’ where famine conditions exist because of a lack of rain. I wonder how we would be reacting here in Cornwall if we did not have any rain for 3 years.  We enjoy the sunny days but we should also value the ‘liquid sunshine’, which gives us the green and pleasant land in which we live as well as the ability to have water on tap and grow crops. There is an old hymn in which the chorus line is ‘Count your blessings, count them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done.’  Some of the inhabitants of Somalia have walked long distances to get themselves to sources of food – mainly the food available has been a form of porridge ‘maize gruel’ distributed amongst the gathered people in make-shift accommodation.  The Shelter box tents will be amongst the best accommodation available in these situations.  For these people, however, the temporary accommodation and meagre food portions are ‘blessings’ which they will be thankful for. When we look at our lives from their perspective we have much to be thankful for.

I have sensed amongst some people reluctance to support the appeal of the Disaster Emergency Committee – which is made up of our major relief charities such as Christian Aid, Tear Fund, Oxfam, Cafod and others combining their efforts to get the much needed relief to the needy areas.  The result of their appeal to date is about £50 million pounds – it sounds a lot of money but there are at least 10 million people in need.  Placing the two figures side by side puts things in perspective – our collective voluntary giving makes £5 available to be spent on each person.  How many meals could any of us make with £5 to spend?

From mid-September through into October Churches, Schools, and other organisation will be celebrating in Harvest Festival Services.  Lustily we shall sing hymns such as ‘Come, ye thankful people come’ and ‘We plough the fields and scatter’ as well as some newer hymns which remind us of the needs of the wider world. All of this raises some serious questions for us to ponder on – and our answers may be uncomfortable for us but ponder we should:-

Are we really thankful for all that is available to us?

Do we appreciate the wonders of the cycles of nature that enables us to eat and live as we do?

Are we sympathetic enough to the needs of those less fortunate than us?

You will be very welcome to share in the Harvest Celebrations in your neighbourhood, and your gifts for the needs of others are really appreciated by the recipients. Every blessing as you ‘Count your blessings’.            BRYAN EDE

ST TUDY GARDEN PRODUCE ASSOCIATION

The Annual Summer Show was held in the Village Hall on Saturday 13th August.  All three judges - Mr Kendrick (vegetables), Mr Bacon (flowers) and Mrs Cragg (floral art) remarked on the quality and high standards of the entries, and the hall did indeed look very bright and full of beautiful flowers and vegetables.

Once again Mr Sidney Bastard swept the board of trophies - the Cups for most points in Vegetable Section as well as Cut Flower Section, The John Stone Cup for most points in Pot Plant Section gained by a St Tudy GPA member, The Lamerton Memorial Cup for best exhibit in show (for his potatoes), the Dray Memorial Cup for most points in Vegetable and Flower Sections and the Top Tray Award.

He did have some strong competition with Mr Armstrong taking the Vegetable Section Runner up cup, Mrs Jenny Keat the runner up Cup in cut flowers, and our chairman Mr Brian Lamerton won the Ron Skyner cup for best Fuchsia exhibit with his six perfect blooms on a board.  Mr Raymond Jago was second place with his Top Tray and Mr M Armstrong third.

Mrs Jasper was the winner of the cups for Most Points in Floral Art and also for Best Exhibit with her stylish arrangement viewed from one side.

Marley Lamerton Madden didn't have much competition in juniors so gained a first in both classes of a seaside garden and arrangement of flowers and foliage.

The Edward-Collins Allotment Cup was won by Mrs Maureen Bloomfield to great cheers from the audience!

Throughout the afternoon there was a steady stream of folk to inspect the entries, Val and Ken Metcalfe manned the door and raffle, Peggy Metters and Val Smith meanwhile kept the refreshments running.

Well done, everyone: without the judges and willing helpers and the entrants alike there just wouldn't be a show.

Our next show is on Saturday 8th October and our winter meetings commence on Monday 17th October.  More information next month.                                                               JANE KING
