St Tudy Garden
Safari & Arts Weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday 20th & 21st July 2002 a Garden Safari was held in aid of St Tudy Church. Ten gardens were open to the public and an exhibition of paintings by the talented 'Clinkers' Art Group was held in the upper room of The Clink, whilst in the lower room delicious teas were being served. The 'Poetry on the Wall' display which had been created for Jubilee Day was also on show again by popular demand!
Visitors paid £2.50 for a map which showed the location of the gardens, some people managed to visit all on one day, others took their time and looked at some on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. The weather was glorious and the complimentary comments from the visitors made all the hard work of preparing the gardens worthwhile. We even had a group of German tourists who seemed very interested in the variety of plants that we can grow in Cornwall.

All the gardens were very different, varying considerably in size and planting; each had it's own distinctive style. People said how nice it was to see 'proper gardens' which gave them inspiration to try something different themselves, and how surprised they were to find such lovely, peaceful havens behind the various houses.

Most visitors normally just walk through the village and only see the facades of the properties so have no idea what goes on behind the scenes! This safari gave them the chance to see so much more. It also gave the local villagers a chance to look around the gardens of people they probably speak to every day, but have never been to their homes before.
Water features are very popular these days and several of the gardens have their own very individual ideas.

Some of the gardens in the village grow typical cottage garden plants, particularly in the older properties.

Others, like the one below have been created very recently.

And we must not forget the front gardens, this one in particular is very patriotic for this Jubilee year, with its red, white & blue flowers.

If anyone who took part in the Safari has any other pictures of the gardens that they visited, perhaps they could let the Webmaster know and they can be added to this article.
